Can someone please explain the gluten allergies to me? I have a niece that has two kids she says are allergic to glutens. Makes no sense to me at all.

Course I’m just an old man who eats everything.

You have probably experienced the common derisive attitude of much of the media and public about gluten allergy.

When my wife and I first heard of it, a cousin of hers was visiting us and told of her ‘celiac’ disease - a serious gluten allergy. My wife and I enjoyed wheat-based baked goods as much as anyone.

I thought the cousin was joking, she wasn’t.

After our daughter was born, my wife began to have extreme gastric distress and reflux after eating. We were mystified. I remembered what she had eaten recently, and remembered her cousin’s comment, and suggested staying away from gluten. It worked like magic.

The hybridization of wheat here has taken it a long way from the ‘bread and wine’ of biblical days. The chemical treatments alone are a little scary. As to what has happened, we simply accept the FACT that gluten is extremely unpleasant, if not dangerous to a lot of people.

Blood tests confirmed an allergy to gluten. It shouldn’t be the subject of humor or snide comments.

Although, ‘funny as a heart-attack’ says it all, I suppose.
