Trump isn't getting more popular, but his policies are

Thanks to the improving economy, something very unusual is going on in American politics.

American voters are separating the personal from the political in perhaps the most significant way ever.

President Donald Trump's overall approval rating in most polls is creeping up lately, yet it remains at historically weak levels for a president at this stage in his first term. But at the same time, voters are starting to become more positive about the economy and more willing to give Trump the credit for it.

Several polls are noting this trend, but it's most clear in the latest Quinnipiac College poll released on Feb. 7. That poll still has Trump at a weak 40 percent approval rating. But 70 percent of respondents said the overall economy is "excellent" or "good." That's up from 66 percent in January and just 53 percent in April of last year.

Most importantly for the political discussion, voters in the Quinnipiac poll said Trump was more responsible for the economy than former President Barack Obama. That was by a 48 percent to 41 percent margin. That's a 16 percentage point swing from January when the poll's respondents said President Obama was more responsible by a 49 to 40 percent difference.

These numbers were enough to get poll expert Nate Silver to sit up and take notice:

This seems important -- it's not just that voters increasingly like how Trump is handling the economy, but also that they're giving him more credit for it instead of treating it as having been inherited from Obama....

Love the President to bits, but as a Michigander I have not quite got past the accent.

“Second, whenever people ask me, how could I vote for Trump when he has all these personality flaws”

i don’t understand people, it seems many are looking for Jesus to vote for and won’t settle for less.

i’ve had to tell many that i’m not voting for Trump to come to dinner. Churchill was considered crass by many also. But look at the vision he had, the courage, and what he accomplished! Imagine if whiny liberal said that he drinks too much, says rude jokes, and has a red face – therefore I won’t vote for him. They would be speaking German today

Thet said the same ting about Reagan in reverse. “He is personally popular, but people don’t like his policies.”

Guess what happened during the 1984 presidential elections with Reagan/Bush vs. Mondale/Ferraro. It was one of the biggest landslides in Modern History!!!

The Fake Polls and Fake Pollsters are so fake these days. There is hardly any info. on the sampling and some polls have a +/- 10% error. This is huge!!!

BTW, the only state that Reagan lost in the 1984 Elections is the state of Minnesota and that was because Ronald W. Reagan gave the state to Mondale and the counting stopped after midnight in the state of Minnesota.

yeah, generally I don’t like the New York “attitude” at all either. Trump isn’t likeable in my book. But he delivers.

I don’t even know how to make sense of state polls for Presidency. They use tiny samplings of 500 to 700 voters. Are polling companies just cheap skates?

Partner, right now you can not have any faith in any polls and we do not even care if they are high caliber polling places because they can not even take an honest poll.

The sampling has been really suspect for myself and the other is the +/- Rats to Pubbies. It is one complete joke.

Also, the infantile Fake News MSM which I now call the "Giant Sixth Grade Brain Journalists" are also a joke. I really do think that real Journalism is dead in this country.
