Acapulco: The resort killed by drugs, guns and gangs
Sky News ^ | February 15, 2018 | By Stuart Ramsay

The American government has issued a stark warning to all potential tourists to Mexico: "Don't go."

It comes after the country revealed nearly 30,000 people were murdered last year - the highest number in 20 years.

The CIA says the violence levels are comparable with the war zones of Iraq and Syria.

The resort city of Acapulco, a former playground of the rich and famous, is now at the centre of a crime wave that has swept across the country. Extortion, kidnapping and murder are daily events.

I joined the Mexican Federal Police on patrol in what is now one of the most dangerous cities in the world.

A police clear-up operation of yet another murder scene quickly descends into a firefight as officers move into houses and make arrests.

It's chaos. The heavily armed police units are firing in all directions, it is unclear if they are being attacked or not.

Although, as everyone is ducking down, they are assuming they are.

Like so many of these incidents it never reached a conclusion. It just petered out. It is life on patrol. Mexico's crazy violence levels are simply out of control.

With murder rates higher than at any point since the government started counting, it was clear before we set out that joining a police patrol would be unusual.

In fact, outside of a war zone I have never seen anything like it. The police are in full combat gear and heavily armed.

There are four trucks of them and in support an even better armed marine unit in case things turn really nasty.

We are in Acapulco, but outside of the main city it quickly becomes very rural. Out here the gangs are in charge, out here the rule of the gun, not the law, governs everything.

My sister was in Acapulco I bet 20 years ago. She said it made her nervous with the army guys with their rifles patrolling the beach. Of course she just stayed in the resort area so I told her she was probably safe.

I’ve only been to Barbados. The best part of the trip was exploring in a rental car. I suppose there is always a risk in doing that anywhere - but there were plenty of other tourists checking out the caves, old landmarks, etc.

About 10 years ago my sister went on a “chick trip” to Mexico with female relatives and friends. I told her to go somewhere else. Sure enough, her purse was stolen.

Mexico is what the democrat party wants to turn the United States into.
They like the bribe money and the ability to murder anyone in their way.

Sad news. I was there in the 1970’s and even back then, we stayed in the resort areas, ate at an American chain restaurant or at the big hotels, watched the cliff divers, did go out to the big public market which was many booths in one central place. Did not venture out into the countryside.

Sadly, Baja’s Cabo San Juan and San Lucas are heading this direction too. 20 years ago I felt perfectly safe. The towns/resorts knew who buttered their bread, the tourists and they put a lot of money into security and police. My last time there 2 years ago... yeeesh. Gang violence, drug violence, murders, the entire atmosphere has changed.

My son and DIL are vacationing in Cancun. When I expressed my concern, they said they’d be sticking to the resort and escorted tours.

The good news is that our grandson is staying with DIL’s parents about five minutes away; we babysat for a few hours last night. He’s a joy at 17 months.

I went to Cabo and PV and saw both as sh!tholes. I don’t get the attraction.

I loved the beeches and water in Hawaii. At Cabo, my brother and I were throwing an “Arobie” (A high speed ring version of a frisbee) in two feet of water on the beech. I dropped it in the water and we lost it. Dead serious.

I have no need nor desire to go to Mexico.

My sister and her husband built a 6,500 sq ft house on the west shore of the gulf of California a few years ago. Beautiful place. They just sold it. They are also done with that country.

But this is not possible. Mexico has very strict gun control laws.

We enjoyed a week of sun in Ixtapa back 20 years ago when we lived in Minnesota. Mexican marines walked the beach every day.
I recall asking the desk clerk about what the marines were looking for...
He said in plain language “Don’t f**k with them...”

Well to be a thoroughly true post, you must say a mix of Venezuela and Mexico. They like starvation to keep people in line.

The early 1990s, you could get a flight out of Peoria, IL at 6am, transfer to Mexican Airlines in Chicago, and be on the beach at your hotel by noon, in Acapulco. The weather perfect, the food great. It was the easiest getaway for retired golfers from Chicago, because the rooms and golf were cheap. The courses were immaculate. I'd stay at the El Camino REal. A really very romantic and cozy 4/5 star hotel, but I always wanted to stay at Las Brisas up on the hill, but couldn't afford it. The rooms started at $300/ night and on up to $600 with your own private pool. They gave you these scooters that were shaped like pink flamingos, and you could see people on these in town shopping. The night clubs were full of young people. We walked to our hotel. In short, it was the ultimate vacation place. Now? The rooms at Las Brisas are under $200. El Camino REal $100. Would love to go there again, but why?
