Liberals outraged: Trump wants to replace food stamps — with food!
The Washington Times ^ | 2-13-18 | Joseph Curl

In his big budget proposal Monday, President Trump offered a novel idea: Instead of giving needy people stamps they can redeem for food, why not just give them actual food?

As you might guess, liberals were enraged by the notion. How dare Mr. Trump try to take food stamps away from hungry people and give them — of all things — food?

Here’s how the liberal HuffPost saw it: “Facing a trillion-dollar deficit because of his just-passed tax cuts, President Donald Trump has an idea for how to get some of that money back: making poor people eat beans and rice.”

Oh, the humanity!

Currently, food stamps — known officially as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) — are provided for some 42 million people, 80 percent of whom get food vouchers each month worth at least $90 per person. They can be redeemed at many stores for food, but the program is rife with abuse.

Under the Trump proposal, those 80 percent of all SNAP recipients would get about half of their benefits in the form of a “USDA Foods package,” NPR reported. “The package was described in the budget as consisting of ‘shelf-stable milk, ready to eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans and canned fruit and vegetables.’”

The program would be called “America’s Harvest Box.” Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue called it “a bold, innovative approach to providing nutritious food to people who need assistance feeding themselves and their families — and all of it is home-grown by American farmers and producers.”

At least this would guarantee that these people get 80% of the benefit in real food. The democrats want people to continue to sell their cards for heroin and crack. Those democrats really care about the children.

From the article - “It’s going to stigmatize people when they have to go to certain places to pick up benefits,” Jim Weill, president of the Food Research and Action Center, told NPR.”

These same people were not stigmatized when they purchased steaks (and whatever they could with little limitations) with their EBT food stamp cards, while those of us who worked waited in line to pay our hard earned cash for hamburger.

If I gave a fresh whole chicken, five pounds of potatoes, and a pound of fresh carrots to a typical SNAP recipient the SNAP recipient would not know what do with fresh food. They would probably trade the food for cigarettes.

A lot of them should be stigmatized. It might be an incentive to make better choices.

So Michelle Obama tinkers with school lunches and it’s all Big Brother telling people what they should eat. Now along comes Department of Agriculture telling food stamp recipients the same thing?

Sounds like no-frills to me, which is exactly what is called for.

This food should not be gourmet food. It should be nutritional, but cause folks to want better. That means getting a job and buying better, if you want better.

It will still take care of their needs, but it’s also an incentive.

Get off your ass.

It is a fact that the EBT/SNAP program is up to the rafters in abuse. Cards are commonly bartered for drugs for example. This would end an enormous black market trade in what is supposed to be government charity for the indigent.

The problem with the food replacement is choice. With EBT you can choose to eat good food, or crap, or sell them for cash.

In a nutshell, the people against in-kind, direct nutrition distribution are PRO-CHOICE. Ironic, isn’t it?

Shouldn't the ire be directed at the government that doesn't place any restrictions on what Food Stamps can be used for?

Put me in charge and we’ll replace food stamps with...Shovels, rakes, mops and brooms, lawn mowers, paint brushes, chainsaws,...

The outrage is coming from Walmart, Safeway, Kroger, Giant Eagle, Food Lion, Kraft, Campbells, Hormel, Kelloggs, and all the other Big Food companies that will no longer have a way to sell to people who don’t have any money.

I was in line at Safeway recently and two young men in front of me paid for their Slim Jims, Red Bull and Snickers bars with EBT cards.

Of course the left blame “food deserts” for obesity among welfare recipients. Mean old corporate whitey not opening stores in areas where shrinkage, robbery and looting make doing so unprofitable, leaving mini-mart liquor stores the only alternative for food in da hood.

Hey Libtard ! This program delivers real food !
