Broward County sheriff's deputies will now carry AR-15 rifles while on school campuses following the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, last week, Sheriff Scott Israel announced today.
The new policy was implemented Wednesday morning. In lieu of gun lockers, the only time deputies will not be "slinging a rifle" is when the firearm is locked in police vehicles, Israel said.
The rifles will not be fully automatic and will only be handled by deputies who are "trained and qualified" to operate them, Israel said.

Some police now carry AR15’s in a key locked upright rack right in front of the center console.
I drove through Detroit a while back and saw a folding stock AK47 sticking barrel up out of a cargo container area on the right side back rear of his motorcycle. That’s some firepower for Detroit cops.
Cop or not, you have to be at least as well armed as your adversary.
I aint there unarmed or not paid to protect children that hate me.

BS. Just putting firsttargets in place expensively. The only effective treatment of the problem is CCWs permitted on school grounds. Best is a requirement that all teachers receive training in handgunnery and the option of carrying on campus. Then advertise that fact.
Sadly for many using that mode, hitting a target over 35 yards can be very iffy. At 40 and above even the best have missed their intended target. Then throw in real life Adrenalin pounding, stress, fear, etc...

Shooting at an armed combatant is a whole lot different from shooting unarmed kids...particularly when he KNOWS he's a target.

Yes! Couple this with the right to sue should you be injured (gun) in any so called “Gun Free Zone” established by any government agency at any level.
You have a point, but the wounds of a massacre are still so raw they require, sometimes, a greater show of force so that the word gets out that these kids at this school willl never be sitting ducks again.
If the deputy with the AR gets picked off, there will doubtless be another armed layer inside the school.
Wonder how long before the teen activists calling to ban all guns will be triggered by the presence of the police making like soldiers on guard with the scary gunz ? Wait for it.

He doesn’t know he is a target. That killer with his own AR shoots him from concealment and walks into the school. You have to have at least two of these guys on campus and that is getting even more expensive. Why cannot even Freepers accept the obviouis and probably only sensible and certainly the cheapest solution- allowing teachers and staff to carry?
My thoughts, pre-planning, walking through many scenarios , training / experiences in my life .......
You have a panic driven herd of kiddies stampeded down a brick and tile kill zone that an active shooter has planned aka hallway ...... my goal is to go to knee or on my side using a corner as cover and and try and shoot at an upward angle to miss the innocent and hit the guilty only , versus be ricochet rabbits bastard child that had to shoot the hostage per se to get to the evil liberal killer.

Namely, define "military style weapon".
