Was going to wait for it on Video, because of a few reasons... 1 the obvious attempt by marketers to turn it into some cultural thing, which it wasn’t but more importantly, Black Panther is a 2nd tier comic book character. He’s not a major player in the Marvel Universe, and I really honestly just don’t care much about the character.
However, my son wanted to see it so I took him.
Here’s an honest review of the film.
Ignore the 96% rating by critics, that’s a flat out joke.. the critics clearly were ridden by white guilt and afraid to honestly review this movie for fear of being called racist. The audience score of 76 or so is far more accurate.
The move is a good movie for its genre but NOT a great one. It is too long, the plot gets muddled in points and the main antagonist is barely one dimensional. And yes, there are indeed a few cringeworthy moments in the film, but they were due to bad writing and directing, not bad acting.
The actors all did a fine job with their roles, even if their roles and characters had no depth.
Its a 2.5-3 star movie or 65-75 out of 100 in my review.
Good, could have been better, well acted, but a muddled script with some a very weak antagonist character depth (almost to the point of need to suspend any semblance of belief to buy into him, yes I know its a comic book based movie, but even for this genre this character was far too shallow for the motivations claimed to drive him to the behaviors he engages in), and some cringeworthy dialog thrown in for no real reason other than racial pandering. Thankfully these moments were few and far between, but they just couldn’t help but put them in there.
The real weak spot in this film was the script... it was not bad, but it was not great. There honestly was potential for a great movie, for its genre, but it walks away with a solid good.
Could you give some examples of "cringe-worthy dialog?"
Need not be verbatim - just the gist.
