hen gunman Nikolas Cruz showed up ready to kill, the lone school resource officer at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High was not in the building that housed freshman.
Instead, School Resource Officer Scott Peterson was elsewhere on the 45-acre campus during the attack that left 17 dead and 16 wounded, Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie said Friday.
“Staff and everyone responded quickly,” Runcie said, based on a briefing by the Broward Sheriff’s Office. “The SRO was communicated with but was on another part of campus.”
Peterson, a deputy with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Parkland district, has been the SRO at Stoneman Douglas High since 2009.
He could not be reached for comment Friday.

45 acres square can be walked across in less than 2-3 minutes...
Maybe he was out “fishing” in the bay...
That's incomprehensible. It's standard procedure in just about every school to have security AND teachers without homerooms supervising at the beginning and end of the school day.
A quick Google search show at least 11 buildings on the campus. Most of them 2 story, some 3 story.
Use Google Earth and look the campus up. 1 officer with an active shooter on that campus? Pure luck if he can locate that guy in less than 5 minutes.
45 acres is big.
The “matter” took but 3 min.
Physics should be able to ascertain the appropriate response time.

What does elsewhere mean? Was he standing in the corner of the school field? Was he mowing the back 40?
They had people screaming, running, rounds being shot off....But the SRO was “Elsewhere”.

Which brings up another solution. Armed coach with a retired police dog already trained for shooters living the life of Riley in the gym office until it’s time to work.

I was raised on a 75 acre farm on the edge of the Smoky Myns Nat’l Park...I could cross our farm in 5 minutes easy...45 acres ain’t that big....
3,000 plus students.. huge high school and campus. Those students who were on the CNN townhall as “survivors” could physically include students who were never in ANY danger.
Uncle used to joke about “Pearl Harbor” survivors (he was a Silver Star combat decorated officer)- as being “anyone in the US Navy on that day-who were either really fired on, or not while there, or a heck of a lot.... who weren’t there. Thought the concept as “silly” self promotion. Was a warrior with that viewpoint.
