More Colorado school staff registering for gun training

Laura Carno, executive director of FASTER Colorado, who helped organize the first statewide training class last summer in Weld County, for school personnel... 48 people have registered for two three-day classes scheduled to be held in Adams County in June. There were 17 people at the debut class last year.

"Dozens of school districts in Colorado already have authorized school staff to carry concealed (weapons), she said. "All we're talking about is having more armed good guys and gals on campuses to deal with (shooting) situations."

FASTER, (or Faculty/Administrator Safety Training & Emergency Response), .. provide weapons and medical training. Last year, it trained Colorado active-duty law enforcement officers on how to provide future instruction to school personnel.

"One of the trainers responded to the (2013) shooting at Arapahoe High School," Carno said. "Another trainer is on a SWAT team. They take vacation days to provide this training. They're amazing people."

...

Carno said around six school districts -- including the Liberty Tree Academy, a new charter school in El Paso County -- were represented in last year's class.

"We don't know yet exactly how many districts will be represented this year," she said. "But we'll have vastly more. It's hard to say how many other school personnel who haven't gotten FASTER training have gotten training on their own. There are other organizations that offer training, but we offer it specifically for school employees in the school environment."

...

Hanover District 28 -- has authorized the arming of school personnel, but that district has not applied for FASTER training and received training from another source.

...

Grant Schmidt, superintendent for the Hanover District, said the school board decided in late 2016 to allow school staff to carry guns.

Great idea, but we need to go one better and push for national reciprocity so that folks that are trained and move can jump right in to protect kids if they are relocated - not to mention all the other CCW holders who could help protect kids when travelling.

How do they get the coyote to provide urine samples?

Excellent.

Now if they will only allow them to carry in schools.

Thanks for clarifying! I read your original comment, and said to myself: “WTF?”

A school teacher in Pennsylvania made her statement against teachers carrying weapons. She said that she was a former Marine, and she was an “expert.” ;-D

I earned the expert badge in the Guard but did not call myself an expert. That would be embarrassing. I also qualified high on police ranges. As a group, hillbillies who hunt are more accurate than people in uniform.

"How do they get the coyote to provide urine samples?"

By running a trickle of water and telling it to imagine a blissful scene.

Don’t know who suggested it, but the idea that schools and police precincts co-locate is a good idea. Land, buildings and parking already municipal owned. Seems like a good idea to me.

“Don’t know who suggested it, but the idea that schools and police precincts co-locate is a good idea.”

That wouldn’t work in areas with multiple schools.

Sorry, but I don't think that is a good idea. I don;t want some cowboy from out of town charging into my school with a weapon. He'll likely endanger himself along with others and get shot for his efforts.

I strongly support screened and trained teachers and staff within the school to be armed and ready to defend their students and staff. School district employees/administrators who are licensed to carry and uniformed officers are the only people who need to be in a school with a weapon.

Why couldn’t it? Small detachments at each school. An office with a squad car parked at the front door.

A woman friend of mine teaches at Colorado Mesa Univ. She has been carrying for years unbeknownst to college officials.

This is exactly the way this problem should be addressed. Train willing teachers, and make lunatics think twice before coming to a school to shoot people.

Trump has even suggested paying Teachers who get certified to handle a firearm, bonuses, which I think is a great idea.

Of course the dems in the legislature turned back a bill to allow CCW in government union schools.

"I don't want some cowboy from out of town charging into my school with a weapon. "

I'll bet the seventeen sets of parents in Florida would give up everything they own in trade for some "cowboy" saving the lives of their kids.

It was at a shopping mall in Oregon, not a school, where a killer saw a concealed carrier taking aim at him so he retreated from his position and took his own life. Just aiming a gun at the coward cut short his crime.

My son-in-law is a former Marine Captain. My daughter married him when he was a 1st Lt. He laughs about how his 2 buddies were amazed when his skinny little wife could out shoot all three Marine officers the first time they all went shooting.

I had her shooting since she was 5. She mostly just shoots when they hunt ducks and quail now but my son-in-law says she is still a better shot than he is with a shotgun..
