Thugs beating up anyone they didn't like - from the IRS targeting Conservatives to the Environmental nutcase goons going after Gibson.
For the millionth time: Thank God Trump Won... and prayers for Gibson.
I used to laugh at Epiphone, until I saw this:
Yes. Having an ebony fret board on your Gibson causes global warming.
If that’s Lennon, remember that Epiphone was a very different company, unowned by Gibson, back in the day.
Epiphone built some of the finest guitars ever seen under their own name.
I owned a 1964 Epiphone Howard Roberts big body jazz guitar and I have kicked myself for over 30 years for letting it go.
“Why would you even consider any Gibson, when you could have a Strat?”
No beef about Strats, just never could make one sound like a Gibson, so the SG is now the only electric guitar I own. Not that they don’t sound good, especially through a Marshall, they just don’t sound the way I want them to for my style, or lack thereof.
I started playing my Dad’s Martin from the 1940s, got a Les Paul Jr for high school graduation. Then, while forming a rock band in the military, moved up to an ivory LP custom. There’s a reason Gibsons were called ‘fretless wonders,’ as they were so much easier on the fingers. Eventually, I swapped the custom for ES-350 TD or something like that. I lost track of it over the years and don’t play anymore.
It’s sad to hear of Gibson’s quality problems. Back in the day, they made great gear. For a time my lead player had a Gretsch, which sounded to me like a Fender with sinus problems. His Fender Jaguar was killer though. He told me recently that he switched to banjo strings on the guitar for the ease of bending. Interesting.
I've heard recordings of Country players doing a solo, low notes, no effects, and I'm thinking..now that guy knows what to do with a Fender. It almost made me like Country...but then, I got over it.
Strat players?
Jeff Beck, Ritchie Blackmore, Eric Clapton, Robert Cray, David Gilmore, Buddy Guy, George Harrison, Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Holly, John Lennon, Bonnie Raitt, Kenny Wayne Shepard, Pete Townsend, Robin Trower, Eddie Van Halen, and of course....Stevie Ray Vaughan.
When I get to Heaven
There’ll be Bar-b-q galore
And a Martin will be
The cheapest guitar in the store.
I like Martins. Have a Yamaha for 6 string acoustic that sounds good enough but is not going to survive another fret filing. I may get a Martin or a Taylor when the time comes.
But all those guys had style, not lack thereof...
Yup, and so will you. Gives you something to strive for.
Now go steal all their licks, and show up at a Blues jam in about a year.
Maybe you should be BLUESLOBSTER.
Of course, you know, the list of LP and SG, not to mention Flying V and Explorer, users includes many of your Strat guys and many others that know where all the notes are at and when and how to get to them.
Been playing only Christian music the last 25 years myself, and my style, or lack thereof, is toward the rock-a-billy, folk, rock. So the SG gets used where I need the sustain for the rock stuff. I’m not much on big leads, just lots of rhythm and some fills. We do have one blues number where I play a lead through 12 bars but I do it on the acoustic.
My old best friend bought a Mexican Strat a couple years ago and got rid of 2 American Strats as the Mexican plays the best and sounds great through his Marshall (he got rid of his Music Man and Carvin amps). He’s a Bad Co., Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, CCR kind of player. He has, however, kept his 2 LPs and one SG.
The absolute best "Christian" music ever...is gospel. You should see those players go at it. I don't care if it's guitar, organ, piano....it's like a completely different genre. Sorta like country/blues melded with jazz....or something.
Whatever instrument it is, you standing there looking at him thinking...."what did he just do there?" And you probably won't figure it out until you go to a youtube or private lesson
Hopefully I will take my own advice, and cop up every gospel lick I can get my hands on. It's all right there for the taking.
Keep on scrubbin...it's just a matter of time.
Back when Derek & The Dominos came out with Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs, Eric was asked, "Who's playing what on the songs?" (Meaning which part was his and which were Duane Allman's?)
He simply said, "He's playing the Gibson. I'm playing the Fender".
Confused most people, but not guitar aficionados.

No doubt. Those were some pretty bad years.
I am definitely in the traditionalist camp with not much interest in anything but the classic designs. To me all the meaningful innovation happened in the ‘50s and ‘60s and at this point it’s a mature industry from a design standpoint.
Well, mostly yes. I did pick an ‘82 hardtail black out strat with a maple fretboard and big head stock on ebay built in Fullerton. Must have been built when they were clearing the shelves and using whatever they happened to grab. It plays and sounds awesome.
They were still building regular production strats in Fullerton in 1982, weren’t they?
“Electric guitars made by World Musical Instruments in South Korea (PRS SE, Michael Kelly, ESP) are of amazing quality and can be had for well under $1000.”
I’m going there this year. Gonna look for one of these... Thanks!
