"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things.
The decayed and degraded state of moral
and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is
worth war is much worse."

"From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day."

William Shakespeare, Henry V

"For all the '4th Generation of War' intellectuals running around today saying that the nature of war has fundamentally changed, the tactics are wholly new, etc.,
I must respectfully say,

'Not really':

Alexander the Great would not be in the least bit perplexed by the enemy that we face right now in Iraq, and our leaders going into this fight do their troops a disservice by not studying- studying, vice just reading - the men who have gone before us. We have been fighting on this planet for 5,000 years and we should take advantage of their experience.

'Winging it' and filling body bags as we sort out what works reminds us of the moral dictates and the cost of competence in our profession."

Marine General James Mattis

Nov. 20, 2003, Addressing the detractors of untested Marine tactics in Iraq.

"You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn't wear a veil.
You know, guys like that ain't got no manhood left anyway.
So it's a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them.
Actually it's quite fun to fight them, you know. It's a hell of a hoot.
It's fun to shoot some people. I'll be right up there with you.
I like brawling."

Marine General James Mattis

Panel discussion in San Diego, California (1 February 2005) as quoted in "General: It's 'fun to shoot some people'" CNN (4 February 2005)(For a more contextualized explanation of General Mattis' remarks, see this essay by one of the Marines who served under Mattis: "Breaking the Warrior Code" The American Spectator (February 11, 2005) by John R. "Some people feel affronted when something they thought to be true doesn't happen. If that's the case, then your sense of risk is much higher, and that leads to risk aversion. You need to be able to be comfortable in uncertainty."

We’re in.

I wouldn’t have much use for the internet if it weren’t for Free Republic.

Thanks Jim!

If I’m out of order, let me know.... It just seems the $$$ are slow coming in this round...

How many FR Patriots are listed? How many check in here at least once a week? If every one of these donated $20-$25, how much would that generate? I’m guessing some give much more and monthly .. but just for calculating, ‘number members’ x $20 = $______.

I can’t imagine not having Free Republic to see the news posted and friendly folks... Please donate to keep it open...

If every FReeper would donate only $2.00 to $5.00 a month, Freepathons would be over in a short time span!

Thank you very much, frnewsjunkie!! We’re a little behind the pace this quarter, but not that bad. We’ll be accruing the balance of the monthlies soon and then it won’t be long until we’re on the homestretch. But you’re right. Only a small percentage of our participants donate. If more of them would, we could pick up the pace. Go, FReepers!!
