Disgraced deputy says he’s no coward for not running into school shooting

The Florida sheriff’s deputy who did nothing as a killer stalked the halls of Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS spoke out for the first time Monday, saying he’s not a coward, according to a report.

Deputy Scot Peterson — who resigned in disgrace from his position as a school resource officer last week — said through a lawyer that he believed the shooter was outside the high school and that protocol demanded he “seek cover,” according to the Miami Herald.

“[He] heard gunshots but believed those gunshots were originating from outside of the buildings on the school campus,” his Fort Lauderdale-based lawyer, Joseph DiRuzzo, said in a statement.

“Broward Sheriff’s Office trains its officers that in the event of outdoor gunfire one is to seek cover and assess the situation in order to communicate what one observes with other law enforcement,” it notes. “[His actions] were appropriate under the circumstances.”

“Allegations that Mr. Peterson was a coward and that his performance, under the circumstances, failed to meet the standards of police officers are patently untrue,” DiRuzzo said in the statement.

Peterson claims he took cover after responding to a report that firecrackers were going off at he school, his lawyer said.

He’s not a “Disgraced Deputy”.

He’s just another school shooting “Survivor”.

If he were smart, he’d put his house on the market and move far, far away. He probably can’t live in that community anymore...

He heard gunshots, but then took cover after getting a report of firecrackers going off?

Smell test just got alot smellier. Is he trying to cover for the Sheriff, who probably gave a stand-down order?

This is a lie IMO. I can tell you there is a huge difference in the report of an indoor vs out door shell firing. The decibel level outside is 3 times the indoor report. The indoor report is also a lower frequency of vibration than outside. All law enforcement have heard the difference hundreds of times at various indoor and out door practice ranges. Also there had to be terrible screaming coming from the building which was a second indicator of indoor carnage. This guy comes up with this 1 week after he freezes in fear and is so gutless he cant tell us himself? He pays his liar to squirt that out. BS!! Where are those other derelict deputies? What happened to them? Never rely on people like this for your personal protection. Follow the law and arm yourself.

Half blind and deaf...that’s it. He lost his hearing aide and couldn’t find it in time to assist.

His police comrades have his house under heavy guard. He doesn’t have to move anywhere & they will escort him wherever he does go.

But blue mafias don’t earn the trust of the citizenry. This is going to chill relations between police & people far beyond Broward County.

And the gun stores have customers lined up to stock up.

Ok,I can’t believe this deputy needed an attorney to say that line of BS. Pretty embarrassing if he was instructed to HIDE while in uniform!!!! The other 4 deputies waited to go in . This sounds like a total Departmental screw up from the top down. The Sheriff should be relieved of his duties.

Who are the other three cowards? Odd this coward is the only one named. Why? Are the other three protected by thin blue line, by union and this guy not? Are the others white or Hispanic while this coward is African-American?

He actually might be telling a truth, or partial truth My BS meter kind-of thinks that he might’ve been following basic protocol. Then Israel realized he himself was in deep sh!t and his first instinct was to start throwing everyone possible under the bus to protect his own ass. My gut tells me he’s the snake in this scenario

Still, in the end, protocol or not, a normal person would do whatever possible to save children’s lives.

So everyone can observe a massacre taking place.

He's getting better protection than he provided to those kids.

“Peterson claims he took cover after responding to a report that firecrackers “

Who takes cover if they think firecrackers are going off ?

Protocols?

Common decency requires that a School Resource Police officer present himself to either shoot the attacker to end the shooting or draw fire away from the unarmed children and onto himself to keep children from being shot

It’s that simple

Absolutely. All but two Republican members of the Florida House of Reps wrote the Governor asking he remove the Sheriff, a power he has in that state.

“There are no guarantees that the police will rescue you in an emergency like this one”

IIRC the Supreme Court ruled than a police officer has no duty to act to protect anyone in any specific life threatening situation....
