Disgraced deputy says he’s no coward for not running into school shooting

The Florida sheriff’s deputy who did nothing as a killer stalked the halls of Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS spoke out for the first time Monday, saying he’s not a coward, according to a report.

Deputy Scot Peterson — who resigned in disgrace from his position as a school resource officer last week — said through a lawyer that he believed the shooter was outside the high school and that protocol demanded he “seek cover,” according to the Miami Herald.

“[He] heard gunshots but believed those gunshots were originating from outside of the buildings on the school campus,” his Fort Lauderdale-based lawyer, Joseph DiRuzzo, said in a statement.

“Broward Sheriff’s Office trains its officers that in the event of outdoor gunfire one is to seek cover and assess the situation in order to communicate what one observes with other law enforcement,” it notes. “[His actions] were appropriate under the circumstances.”

“Allegations that Mr. Peterson was a coward and that his performance, under the circumstances, failed to meet the standards of police officers are patently untrue,” DiRuzzo said in the statement.

Peterson claims he took cover after responding to a report that firecrackers were going off at he school, his lawyer said.

He is essentially the protocol is to seek cover when a kid is shooting up other kids at a school? Who set THAT protocol? Firecrackers? There were screaming and running children.

God help us, because the devil won’t.

It’s possibly true that in a suburban or urban setting, it’s not going to be as easy to locate the sound of gunfire. Let’s wait for military experts to weigh in. Because if the public talk about this has devolved to screams for more gun control from the left and misplaced accusations of cowardice on the right, the devil has misled all of us badly. We’re all playing on our own favorite harps when the score called for a brass section.

What about the 20 minute delay on the internal school tapes? Without that LEOs would have been able to see, in real time, what was happening and where. They’s have also been immediately able to identify the perp., instead of letting him run off and almost make a clean get away, but for quick, smart action by an officer from another jurisdiction.

Is the lawyer a ventriloquist for the Coward of Broward? Was the deputy sitting on his lap? or vice versa.

If there is not an earnest inquiry into logistics of this situation, then there will not be an improvement next time around, and in fact a havoc-bent shooter will know to choose similar circumstances because everybody will blame each other and not learn one iota.

Who doesn't take cover when the firecrackers start popping?

He’s not a coward? So then he was ordered to stand down?

Dunno about this, but Cruz was apparently a ventriloquist for Satan.

Satan is fiendishly clever at misleading and blaming by turns, and orchestrating situations like this would be up his alley. Don’t you think the devil knows the laws of physics?

MOST rightwingers know the 2005 SCOTUS decision that the police are NOT there to protect you. I had to explain this rule to liberals and they had to Google it.

There is a reason why people cannot sue the cops from a reason called ‘they were not there to stop the crime’ AND no lawyer will accept it. Unless you add the RACE’ angle, then go forward..

If the state disarms its citizens as surely it does in these “gun-free zones” then it has the absolute obligation to accept total responsibility for attacks such as these. And now, we are to believe the police need more power and more of the citizens to be disarmed? This is insanity. The state of Florida should be sued. The police including this officer should be sued. The school board and school sued as well. After their pockets have been sucked clean they might consider the necessity of allowing people their inherent right of armed self defense.

It sounds like something may be missing from the sequence reported here by the news. I wouldn’t even take this as a complete account of what his attorney had said without verification.

“He’s not a coward? So then he was ordered to stand down?”

BOTH. That’s why you cant have liberals have guns which I stated time and time again. They cant even protect themselves why should we waste a fine piece of weaponry on these pukes?

How about asking some of the running kids where the shooter is?

I don’t like it and I think it is wrong - but typical training and protocol is to wait on swat and half the force to arrive before anyone does anything. Too bad if a bunch of children die.

Cops have become excessively risk adverse (and simultaneously verbally aggressive) - because that is the way most of the training these days is focused. If you take the job you should be willing to risk all under certain circumstances. And a school shooting should be one of them.

There is no legal obligation enforceable in a court; there may be incentives and sanctions at an organizational level and in fact that system often does work well.
