If the sheriff is removed and a new sheriff is sworn in, does the new sheriff keep the deputies hired by the previous replaced sheriff?

I guess it depends on the system of the State.. but, yes, it can happen.

Back in 1998, while I was a deputy, we had our first black sheriff elected, and he fired the majority of white people (including me) and replaced us with other ‘minorities’.

He lasted about 2 years before he was busted himself breaking into a state Drug enforcement building to destroy evidence.
I have NO idea what happened after that (besides him disappearing from public), but he was replaced as sheriff very quickly (and quietly). I wish I knew more, but it was very hush-hush, and I was already over here in Japan.. so I could only get information that my prior ex-deputy buds could pass on to me.
