Cognizant Moves 8000 Jobs Out Of India; Increases Headcount In US

IT Services giant Cognizant is moving jobs out of India and increasing their headcount in the US.

This massive job erosion from India is taking place due to sustained political pressure from the US. And this is not a good sign for India.

Cognizant: 8000 Jobs Moved Out Of India

As per data shared by the company, it has been found that while jobs are being moved out of India, their positions in the US has been increased.

It is still not clear as to how many out of 8000 jobs which moved out of India were relocated to the US, or how many were asked to leave.

As per latest employees number shared by Cognizant, here is the breakdown (at the end of 2017):

Total employees: 2,60,000 North America: 50,400 Europe: 13,800 Other locations of the world: 1,95,800, which includes 1,80,000 in India Now, if we dig deep, and find out their employment numbers in 2016, then we will find that India headcount was 1.88 lakh, and in the US, it was 47,500.

This clearly means that a large percentage of jobs were shifted out of India, and placed in the US instead.

What exactly is happening?

Cognizant: Immigration Regulation Is Scary!

In their report, it is clear that Cognizant is scared of increasingly tough regulations pertaining to immigration, work visas, and subsequent business loss.

If there is a delay in obtaining visas for their consultants, then their work will get hamper, and they will lose business. As simple as that.

In their report, Cognizant said,

“If we are unable to obtain such visas or work permits, or if their issuance is delayed or if their length is shortened, we may not be able to provide services to our customers or to continue to provide services on a timely and cost-effective basis, receive revenues as early as expected or manage our delivery centres as efficiently as we otherwise could, any of which could have a material adverse effect on our business, results of operations and financial condition.”

If we read between the lines, then we will find that Cognizant has clients based in U.S., Europe, Asia Pacific and other regions; and they need to send their consultants, experts to these countries.

Now, with US making it tough to obtain work visas, like H1B, companies such as Cognizant find it difficult to send their employees from say India to the US.

And this is what President Trump wants.

Cognizant has been one of the top recipients of H1B visa since last few years, and the tough H1B visa regulations have clearly shaken them.

We will keep you updated.

Joke in my business is ...”Can you name one successful Indian software company?”. Indian IT work is like Chinese electronics, cheap, unreliable and will disappoint you if you use it enough.

North America isn't only the U.S. We know that in 2016 there were 47,500 in the U.S. How many of that current 50,400 is U.S., how much is Canada, how much is Caribbean, and so forth.

Great, now that I have officially retired.

We are going to find a lot of crappy code - worked at Oracle, hated the sloppy way many of the "new hires" coded (cut, paste, debug).

How sad for them. The first time I was ever outsourced was by Cognizant "consultants" on L1 visas. Nothing is quite as soul destroying as having to train someone to take over your job.

Are the Indians cognizant of what has happened to them?

At the end of the day I suspect this is all smoke-and-mirrors and the product of creative accounting. This work can be done in India for a fraction of the cost of American workers. Cognizant is already locked-in on pricing on long-term contracts.

Bottom line: This is a bit of PR spin, little more.

And how many of the 800 jobs were or will be filled by Indians on H1B visas in the U.S., versus actual, born in the U.S. American citizens?

Americans better wait for the details before celebrating. The Washington swamp extends into corporate board rooms across the country. From yesterday's FR:

"Taxpayers Subsidize Foreign Students {jobs in the U.S.}:"

“The Optional Practical Training (OPT) program, in which the American government pays American employers to discriminate against American workers has grown rapidly in recent years, and during FY 2017 it used nearly $2 billion swiped from trust funds for the elderly to favor 240,000 alien college grads over an equal number of U.S.-resident grads,”

The anti-American "American" employers even had their whore "American" politicians steal the $2 billions for foreign employees from funds for America's elderly!

An honest journalist should be able to find out which companies took the most advantage of that program AND which Washington politician those companies gave their political contributions to.

My son is in IT and noticed that the Indians can follow procedure and protocol if its written down but when they have to do it on the fly or think outside the box they’re hopeless.

” Indian IT work is like Chinese electronics, cheap, unreliable and will disappoint you if you use it enough.”

If you do not give Indians specific instructions, the minute they don’t understand what your instructions are they will shut down. This is why having conference calls with them is ridiculous. Most of the time they don’t get what you are saying and the ones who do understand it are already here.

Not necessarily. If they are embedded, they do fine. The problem is that they are trained in India to only follow orders. If you treat them like an American programmer, they do fine. I work with several Indian programmers.

If anything, the problem is that there aren’t very many older Indian programmers. Their goal is management. It’s a prestige thing. So there is a constant shortage of programmers because they age out so early.

When they reach management in America, their worth begins to slip because of the language and cultural barrier.
