Florida Senate rejects ban on assault weapons, votes to arm teachers

The Florida Senate rejected a proposal to ban assault weapons, and voted for a measure to arm some teachers, weeks after 17 people were killed in the deadliest high school shooting in U.S. history.

An amendment that would have banned assault weapons attached to a wider bill failed on Saturday in a largely party-line vote, in response to the Feb. 14 killing of 14 students and three faculty at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in the Fort Lauderdale suburb of Parkland.

The vote was 20-17 against the assault weapon ban, with two Republicans joining all of the senate’s 15 Democrats in support of the proposal, the Miami Herald reported.

The full bill, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act, is expected to pass the state Senate on Monday, then go to the Florida House.

After the Senate rejected the ban, Stoneman Douglas student Jaclyn Corin tweeted,“This breaks my heart, but we will NOT let this ruin our movement. This is for the kids.

Fellow classmate David Hogg, who has become one of the school’s leading activists on gun safety, tweeted,“Elections are going to be fun!”

Also, an amendment to remove a provision to train and arm some teachers failed.

The bill raises the minimum age to buy a rifle or a shotgun to 21 from 18 and bans the use, sale or possession of bump stocks, which were used in the Oct. 1 shooting deaths of 58 people in Las Vegas. The device effectively turns semi-automatic weapons into automatics.

The bill includes $400 million in funding for schools to address mental health issues, the Herald reported.

Assault weapons are already banned.

What's an "assault weapon?"

Stop using their language.

Buy your daughter a gun. Don’t allow her rapist in college to buy one when his parents know he is a nut job. Absolutes lead to absolute stupidity. Bump stocks, who cares. Any shooter can bump fire but why waste the ammo? Bump stocks allow nut jobs to bump fire. Experienced shooters know bump fire is kind of a joke. It is like shotgun fire. Good at 10 feet but hell, try and bump fire a target at 150 yards or more. Think man... think.

No and NO.

IMO, the only age restriction I see is acknowledging liability (aka ‘adulthood’). Fedzilla has no other authority in the former and damn sure NONE in the latter (via infringed).

Course, Federalism and the Constitution are such outdated concepts these days....Just ask the young Mr. Hogg.

Is the 400 million for mental health earmarked for the liberal teachers?
>>

No those are the people they plan on arming.
>

It should ‘cost’ $0%. Get govt OUT of the way and those that wish to utilize their 2nd can do so.

Else, where do *I* go, NOT being a teacher, for the govt to arm ME??

Evidence for Hogg as a crisis actor: The photograph of him that was at arrest.org showing him to be 27 and arrested for drug possession.

Evidence against Hogg as a crisis actor: Social media posts.

After all the shadow banning, website demonetization, website banning, post removal and so on, why oh why would anyone trust evidence from social media? This is especially so given the social media’s desperation to have a “for the children” spokesperson to push gun control. The left has made this astroturf student a superstar.

How old do they have to be legally to steal a gun?

“Curious - has ANYONE said this Hogg drama queen actually IS a classmate at that school?”

Not that I know of. Of course that could be rigged too.

The brazen fake news by the media makes it more challenging today to find out. In the past nobody was so brazen to attempt such things. Now they have been getting away with murder and seem to have no limits to what they will say and do.

Mmm hmm...just a partisan activist as suspected. So this is "fun" to him?

Indeed - he had committed multiple felonies he was never charged with including bringing weapons to school. Apparently he even called the authorities himself once saying he had problems.

If they had acted, all of these lives may have been saved and this evil he allowed to consume him and act out may have also been dealt with and saved his life as well. But they did NOTHING. Not one, not twice, not three times...but DOZENS of times.

Just tell the anti-gunners that Bumpfire guns are SINGLE SHOT rifles. One trigger pull = one shot!
