Sturmgewehr on the select-fire (meaning both semi-auto and full-auto capable) MP. 44, and the English translation ("assault rifle") stuck. Socialists naturally love to use socialist terminology, and the more lurid the better.
"Armalite," by comparison, isn't sufficiently brutal sounding for the argot and cant necessary to stir up the mob.
