Imagine that! Is all fair in the war of competition? Old media threatened by upstart media, tries to strangle them by trying to cut off their revenue sources. I’m sure it is just a coincidence that these accusations against Jones dropped at the same time.

For the record, CNN is actually ‘ratting’ Infowars out. This is an oversimplification but the way it works is that the large companies buy advertising in bulk - they spend so many millions every month and they just want the ads seen by everyone. They don’t necessarily pick and choose where every ad will appear. So they buy 1 gazillion views from Google/Youtube and Youtube serves up random commercials on various videos.

But the advertisers can tell Youtube “we don’t want to be on this channel”. And what CNN is doing is going around to the advertisers who happened to have their random ads served on one of Infowars videos and “letting them know”. The inference of course is that there is some stigma associated with Infowars. I doubt CNN is ratting out MSNBC or even Fox News for example.

I doubt it is a coincidence these charges against Alex dropped today.

I am not so naive to believe this is just your routine competitive free market maneuver. This is part of a larger ideological war, as well as a war to maintain significance. The way cable subscriptions are dropping and streaming rising, in 10 years having a TV channels will mean a lot less than it does now - sort of like the way newspapers have become obsolete. CNN has to compete in the new media but the cost to broadcast via stream is a lot less than on cable and the news supply is more fragmented but also globally distributed. This means CNN is likely to lose viewers, revenues and influence over time. But there is a much seedier side to all this too. They want to silence some views. I don’t watch Infowars so I really can’t speak to its content but the whole thing smells fishy and a little desperate, as well as underhanded. It smacks of McCarthyism.
