Chicago's Top Cop Says "Death Wish"
The Chicago Tribune ^ | March 5, 2018 | Kim Jansenn

Don’t count on running into Chicago police Superintendent Eddie Johnson at a screening of the Chicago-set remake of “Death Wish.”

The Bruce Willis movie is “not the type of narrative we want for our city,” Johnson said Friday, criticizing MGM for releasing the violent revenge fantasy so soon after the killing of Chicago police Cmdr. Paul Bauer in the Loop.

“It’s unfortunate,” Johnson told WLS-AM 890’s Bill Cameron on Friday when he was asked about the timing of the release of the movie, which opens with the downtown killing of a police officer. “But of course I don’t think Hollywood really pays attention to that type of thing.”

While the original was set in New York, the remake is set in Chicago and takes advantage of national headlines about the city’s murder rate. Critical reviews have noted the similarities between the portrait painted by the movie and that peddled by President Donald Trump.

Johnson said the movie, in which Willis plays an Evanston surgeon who seeks violent retribution for the murder of his wife and shooting of his daughter, is “not the type of narrative we want for our city, because we get poked enough on the crime issues that are in this city. What frustrating for me about that is that this city is not the crime show that people want to paint us out to be.”

Johnson touted last year’s reduction in homicides after an awful 2016 and added, “people compare us to New York and Los Angeles (which have far lower per capita homicide rates) but we have neighborhoods in our city safer than both of those places.”

He sighed, and chuckled. “That’s Hollywood. I just want people to know that Chicago is a safe and beautiful city.”

MGM did not immediately comment Monday.

The Chicago Police Department had a homicide closure rate of 14% last year (86% of murders were unsolved). This was a detail that was incorporated into the movie script.

The actual police superintendent was not even an applicant for the top job nor was he interviewed for the position by the search committee or included on the committee's list of finalists when he was tapped by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel to be his stooge.

The Bruce Willis movie is “not the type of narrative we want for our city,” Johnson said Friday...

That may well be, sir, but it is the type of narrative you have earned for your city.

“not the type of narrative we want for our city,”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They want a narrative that isn’t so truthful.
Pay no attention to the weekend drive-by body count.
Police Commissioner Johnson doesn't like the idea of criminals being blown away by private citizens.
Is vigilante law better than no law at all?
It's a remake of an actual good action move..........Not worth watching.
As a side note, I watched a remake of "The Longest Yard" on cable last week and all it had to offer was different actors doing the exact same thing the first movie did..........Waste of time......
Johnson said the movie... is “not the type of narrative we want for our city".
The movie narrative isn't even half as bad as the actual Chicago narrative. Chicago is a disgrace to this country and the police and the local democrat controlled government is entirely to blame. How many of our children have to die because of the illegal drugs pouring out of Chicago before the national guard is sent in to restore order? That's what I want to know.
Whenever they toss that logic at me, I like to remind them that Illinois passed strict gun control and the criminals found away around it just as we said they would and crime went up, just as we said it would, and the only effect was to disarm law abiding citizens just as we said it would be.
Just saw it. We loved it and wished it was longer. Willis is perfect for the role.
Just as long as you don't come within 50 miles of it.
Not only is it better than no law at all, but it is a catalyst for bringing in the law like you wouldn't believe. The history of the old west is full of lawless examples who, once they got vigilante justice, got the law to do its job so as not to be permanently replaced.
