My vote is twice powerful this way. They lost a vote and their opposition gains one. I normally wouldn’t do this but this arm twisting on this issue is unforgivable. The next generation of officials need to get a clear message.

You have this exactly right. Some people will say voting for the opposition is "Stupid", but what is stupid is letting people cross a red line without getting destroyed for doing it.
If people learn you won't defend red lines, they will keep crossing them. The long term gain requires that they believe voting for gun control measures will end their career.
