USS John McCain’s ‘sudden turn’ led to deadly collision that killed 10 sailors

A US guided missile destroyer’s deadly collision with an oil tanker near Singapore in 2017 was caused by “a sudden turn” made by the warship that put it in the path of the commercial vessel, said a report by the Singapore government Thursday.

The collision on Aug. 21, which killed 10 sailors and was one of a handful of incidents in the Asia Pacific region involving US Navy warships, raised questions about Navy training and led to the removal of a number of officers.

“The collision between the USS John S McCain (JSM) and Alnic MC (AM) as they were transiting through the Singapore Strait happened because of a sudden turn to Port by JSM, which caused it to head into the path of AM,” the report said.

“The US Navy subsequently announced a series of systemic reforms aimed at restoring basic naval skills ...”

What a novel idea...to teach seamanship to sailors. The Obama stank touched everything and lingers on like skunk smell in a sleeping bag.

>> Port wine is red <<

And starboard wine is green?

No thanks. I’ll take the red.

(And by the way, there is such a thing as white port. They still make it in Portugal, original home of “port” wine.)

I thought a reference to “left turn” in the context of John McCain was an obvious political joke, but I guess I was wrong.

I think most of us "got it". BTW, it was indeed a "left turn" by the JSM, right in front of the Alnic. Picture a street intersection with a left turn lane marked "Left Turn on Green, After Yield" - the McCain failed to yield to the (large, looming) tanker.

In other words - the ship really represents its namesake... Port (Left) turn.... into disaster.

Namesake?

Funny thread, but everyone knows the ship is NOT named for Sen. McCain. right?

Did they at least put their turn signal on?

That was another joke, just in case it's not clear to certain people.

Could the controls have been hacked? How computerized are our naval ships? A change in a GPS setting might cause a sudden turn. Is there any sort of collision or threat avoidance system on board that is computerized?

.........I’ve been in late night ship traffic on the Mississippi on the bridge or in CIC which stood for Combat Information Center back then.

I’ve also been, decades later, on the Houston Ship Channel late at night in my own 46 foot motor sailor.

I can honestly say that both times everyone involved was paying 1,000% attention to what was going on around us. So, I just can’t understand for the life of me how a US Navy Warship is driven into a merchant ship.....accidentally!

As an organization, the US Navy has more experience sailing the seven seas than any other on earth. This begs the question “what the F was going on?” I don’t think we will ever know the TRUTH.

Agree completely. I can’t even imagine. There have been times where the helmsman has tried to show up an OOD that was not paying attention by making a big donut in the water gradually.

I can’t see this being the case here.

Was the person in charge an inexperienced (a)lesbian, (b) tranny, (c) homo, (d) political-based appointment or (e)all of the above?

Two Questions: Was the turn ordered by the officer of the deck? If so, when did the OOD convert to Islam? If not, when did the helmsman convert to Islam?

There have been times where the helmsman has tried to show up an OOD that was not paying attention by making a big donut in the water gradually.

A degree or two off course for a minute or so will trigger the command "Mind your helm" from a good OOD. I was "driving" in a heavy quartering crosswind one voyage and had to correct constantly. By the time I was relieved I had discovered that the only way to stay near to on-course was to hold a constant 3 degree rudder angle.

McCain also tried to sink the flat top Enterprise.

I was an icebreaker pilot. Not uncommon to steer the same course for an entire watch en route to Antarctica (by way of Australia in most instances). There were OODs with their heads up their keesters such that helmsmen managed to ‘make the loop’ on them.

“The Navy statement said it was “evident the collision was preventable, the commanding officer exercised poor judgment and the executive officer exercised poor leadership of the ship’s training program.

The commander of the Japan-based 7th Fleet was fired shortly after the crash.”

Just look at the litany of weasel words! Isn’t this what government (in this case the Military) does in all cases? Paper over a major loss of life accident with a lot of verbal BS. Seventeen young men are dead and this is what you get?
I worry that if we have to go to war with North Korea we may have a problem winning!
