The statement tonight by South Korean National Security Adviser Chung Eui-yong is so jaw-dropping in significance it has left the professional diplomatic apparatus stunned.
A year of targeted and strategic geopolitical policy execution by President Trump, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley has resulted in North Korean leader Kim Jong-un accepting denuclearization and requesting a meeting with President Trump to achieve terms therein.
The possibility of a willingly denuclearized Korean peninsular is such an astounding policy victory; it is difficult to conceptualize. Here’s the statement from South Korea’s Chung Eui-yong:
“Good evening, today I had the privilege of briefing President Trump on my recent visit to Pyongyang, North Korea. I’d like to thank President Trump, the vice-president and his wonderful national security team, including my close friend General McMaster.”
“I thanked President Trump that his leadership, and his maximum pressure policy together with international solidarity, brought us to this juncture. I expressed President Moon Jae-in’s personal gratitude for President Trump’s leadership.”
“I told President Trump that in our meeting North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said he is committed to denuclearization. Kim pledged that North Korea will refrain from any further nuclear or missile tests; he understands that the routine joint military exercises between the Republic of Korea and the United States must continue. And he expressed his eagerness to meet President Trump as soon as possible.”

South Korea has twice the population and 50 times the economy of the North.
They are capable of defending themselves. If they are not, then they better get started. It is no longer our responsibility.
This is an intra-Korea problem, an internal affair, NOT OUR BUSINESS.

How about another view of things:
Fat Kim and his cohorts are looking to divide and conqueror and suckering the U.S. into discussions that the North never intends to keep.
The South has a very Liberal Left President now that would give the North just about anything they wanted all in the name of “peace” (note the quotes).
And with the North issuing statements basically telling the South that their beef isn’t with their brothers but with the U.S. it’s a definite attempt to divide two allies and weaken their resolve to stand up tot he North.
It’s just another case of the North playing the U.S. to try and get supplies and take the heat off while they reload their rocket program all the while making promises they never intend to keep.

No no no no. There is plenty of work. TRex has assigned them to the high priority job of working down the embarassing backlog of responses to FOIA requests. With all hands on deck there is a good five years worth of work to do there. And, "it's the law."

Yes, it's a combination of that, and an entirely erroneous buy in by them that their pedigree actually means something. It doesn't. Essentially I'm saying that politics is full of people of average talents but delusion-driven egos. It's a bad combination that prevents them from learning from their mistakes or actually assessing facts.

The real deterrent to NK using nuclear weapons for blackmail is that we will still have ours. And if the NK's "suddenly find" their nukes, we can put troops right back there if that's what we want to do.
The relative military balance between ROK and NK has shifted over the last few decades to the point where the ROK's are fully capable of defending themselves. If we can verifiably ensure that NK has gotten rid of its nukes and launch capabilities, then withdrawing U.S. troops and signing a permanent peace treaty is actually a win for us, for the ROK's and for NK.
I gotta be honest. I totally did not expect anything from Trump or the US on this point. My assumption was that N Korea would get a nuke/icbm this year. I didn’t think it was stoppable...and really and truthfully, I say that without any criticism of Trump. I just figured that is what would happen, and then he would have to contend with the aftermath.
If he pulls this off, I’m just going to be in awe.
Negations help if either you are in a position of strength or have something to barter or possess some knd of leverage. Isn’t this Diplomacy 101???

That wasn't true decades ago when the ROK's really needed us there for our ability to defend on the ground.

He may not have to worry abut re-election, but he is always worried about a coup—why he assassinated his brother, uncle, etc.
That said, I doubt he has read Art of the Deal, and I think Trump will out-maneuver him in any meeting—I just think it would be best to have it somewhere besides NK and with surrogates—at least until all is known of what Kimchi will give up...
