“Finally, the United States must lead efforts to resolve decades of ethnic strife throughout Myanmar”

Their hubris would fill the Grand Canyon several times over.

Myanmar has been doing so well in resolving its “ethnic “ (read “religious”) strife within their own country.

The Rohingya are doing an excellent job of self-deportation to the kind of land they want to bring to Myanmar, by fleeing to Bangladesh, a crowded, abysmally poor Muslim-majority country. Trying to resettle these refugees back into Myanmar is like trying to stuff toothpaste back into the tube.

Forcing Islam upon people who are resistant to its blandishments is compelling change that is actually not to the benefit of Muslims and non-Muslims alike. For the non-Muslim, it means an extinction of their own culture, because there is no such thing as “co-exist” with Islam once it gets above a certain percentage of the population (somewhere between 5 to 10 percent of the total population. For the Muslim, almost certainly there will arise doctrinal differences based on some nuance in the interpretations of the Koran that puts one Muslim at the throat of any and all other Muslims, and a mutual suicide pact is joined, with collateral damage on all sides, as observed in Libya and Yemen.

The United States is well positioned, right now, to stay the hell out of this bottomless pit of strife.

Many other countries in the Far East have managed to resolve their internal strife with Muslims quite well - Chine by total repression of the Uyghur culture in their northwest, and Japan by purposely limiting the entry of Muslims to visitor status only. The Philippines have not done nearly so well, as there is an entrenched Muslim guerrilla warfare minority that causes endless mischief all over the archipelago. Myanmar looks over at the Philippines, and says, “not for us”.

McCain and Jolie? How did they get together? Why would the NYT print such foolishness?
