Perhaps you are speaking of AFDC (Aid For Dependent Children)? Now it’s called TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) and it’s paid in cash.

Damn gvt handouts drive me crazy. That’s MY MONEY they’re giving these layabouts.

No this is a different one. I worked for the welfare department and know what TAND is. Sheesh! This is for what they term indigent adults. I just can’t remember the proper name for it.

Ahha. Found it. It’s called General Assistance.

General assistance may be offered as well. This includes rent and utility assistance for low income individuals and the working poor. Any money is paid directly to your landlord or utility company. Vouchers for basic needs may be offered too. Also look into Medi-Care, Food Stamps, Healthy Families, Medi-Cal, and other public aid.
