“This was no black legend”

I guess it’s just too early.

I have had leftard cow-orkers who could not be convinced by any amount of proof that CNN puts out fake news.

Now, after all these years, the number of people who understand that has grown to a significant number.

I guess it’s just too early for the Black Legend to be seen for what it is.

I’ve read books on the history of this period. Possibly also the Michener book to which you refer, although I’m not certain. You’re confusing two things. The idea that the Inquisition took part in forcible conversions is a myth, put to music by Mel Brooks in one of his best skits ever. But that the populace of Spain, incited by the fiery harangues of a popular Bishop that fueled their own personal resentments, engaged in pogroms and forcible conversions is historical truth. I recall even reading of a forced convert asking the Catholic hierarchy for relief from being deemed a Christian on the grounds that his conversion was coerced, and the ecclesiastical court ruled against him, because his actual immersion in a baptismal font was a voluntary act, even though he was doing it because of threats to his person. The Inquisition only had jurisdiction over Christians accused of heresy or Judais-ing, and even the auto da fes were conducted by the civil authorities.

Now the British, during their wars with Spain, did invent a lot of myths, but they only concerned themselves with crimes against Protestants, not Jews, for whom they didn’t care a fig.
