New evidence the Stormy Daniels payment may have violated election law
Bezos the DNC and his Washington Post ^ | 3-12-18 | Philip Bump

One short, newly revealed email from a Manhattan banker just made it much more likely that the $130,000 payment to porn star Stormy Daniels shortly before the 2016 election violated federal law.

NBC News on Friday reported that Michael Cohen, President Trump’s longtime ally and attorney, had used a Trump Organization email address as he worked to secure the payment to Daniels. Daniels alleges the money was paid to keep her from telling the media about a sexual relationship she had with Trump; Cohen and Trump continue to deny that relationship.

NBC received a copy of an email from banker at First Republic Bank that was sent to Cohen. Cohen then forwarded the email to his private Gmail account and, from there, to Daniels’s attorney.

Notice the email address. The banker emailed Cohen at mcohen@trumporg.com. Trumporg.com redirects to Trump.com. The domain is registered to the Trump Organization. It is, in other words, an email address that belongs to the Trump Organization — an asset of the company.

That means that federal election law was almost certainly violated.

We spoke with Lawrence Noble, senior director and general counsel at the Campaign Legal Center. He walked us through the danger zones for the Daniels payment in terms of what election law prohibits. At the time, it was not clear where the money had come from or how it got to Daniels. We lacked a number of details about how Daniels and Trump’s team, Cohen in particular, had interacted.

We have learned a lot since then. In addition to the email above, we have also seen the lawsuit filed by Daniels alleging the agreement to remain silent was never in effect because Trump failed to sign it. Included in that lawsuit is this element of the “factual background” to the matter at hand.

Who did she actually mess around with, if anybody? If it wasn’t Donald we have no issue here, other than a person improperly using an email address.

There has been so much crying of wolf here that I’d want to look and see if they told me the sun just rose in the east.

It’s looking like Cohen rather than Trump was fooling around.

It has to do with election campaign finance law.

Doesn't mean anything but a paying campaign finance or fine. .

Well, the bible belt set already knew Donald had a flirtatious reputation. And didn’t hold that against Donald.

“Stormy Daniels helped Trump beat Hillary Clinton!”

She could have helped Hillary by making her threats before the election.

Trump is allowed to deal with personal matters. Just because Ibanka smacked the doorman, and that makes it campaign news, does not mean it isn’t personal business.

I have two things to say about this: I don’t care, and I really don’t care what whores and democrats have to say.

Would that mean failing to disclose payments to a hit man who was contracted to take out a DNC leaker, for example, a violation of federal election law?

Or how about this—the campaign made it more likely that this woman would bring his indiscretion into the news media, whether or not prompted by a bribe.

And Trump understandably did not want to risk his family relationships because of that.

So he paid her off.

These people not only don’t know election law, they are grasping at straws.

They know the law but they know the MSM better, they are grasping for headlines and getting them.

Same here. As his lawyer, Cohen protects his reputation from garbage like this. It’s a personal expense and probably a common one. Ask bill O’Reilly. Trials are more costly and injurious than just settling.

The truth is that any payment could be twisted during a campaign to pretend it was related to the election.

So, this really is about injuring Trump with female voters.
