President Trump told troops in California on Tuesday that the U.S. would be going to Mars in the very near future.
"Very soon we're going to Mars. You wouldn't be going to Mars if my opponent won, that I can tell you. You wouldn't even be thinking about it," Trump said.
Trump signed a directive in December aiming to send Americans to the moon, and eventually Mars.
The directive orders NASA “to lead an innovative space exploration program to send American astronauts back to the Moon, and eventually Mars,” according to the White House.
The president has made various changes to U.S. space policy during his first year in office.
Trump's space policy will replace former President Obama’s, which did not include a goal to return to the Moon. Obama’s policy focused on sending astronauts to deep space and potentially an asteroid by 2025, and to orbit Mars by the mid-2030s.
Vice President Pence announced the relaunch of the National Space Council last year.
The council works to centralize various federal agencies with oversight into space policy.
“Under President Donald Trump, America will lead in space again and the world will marvel,” Pence said.
"Our National Space Council will help our nation re-energize the pioneering spirit of America," he continued. "And it will ensure that America never again loses our lead in space exploration and technology."
bammy cut the space program because it was a symbol of American greatness, and redirected NASA to m*slim outreach. Not a word in the media, ever. Not a word of criticism from the “scientists,” ever.
Will Trump get credit for this from the media or the “scientists”? We both know the answer.
I was going to write, “Enough with the idiocy,” but I like your approach.
According to someone I know who works for NASA, the problem with sending humans to Mars is the amount of radiation they would be exposed to in the long trip to get there. Then the radiation they would be exposed to on the surface and then the same on the return trip.
The other major problem with exposure to zero gravity is actual bone loss, muscle loss and effects of zero gravity on our eye balls.
It is all the physical effects that would happen to the people, not the ability to build a rocket, send them and then bring them back.
This is what we have learned by sending people to the international space station for the last X years. FYI, the NASA employee that told me this is also a former US Air Force Lt. Colonel and now a member of the Air National Guard. He is a pilot and was a navigator and bombardier in the Air Force prior to joining NASA. He trained with astronauts that flew on the space shuttle.
The present is not the past.
There are private efforts that can be very useful. In the old days, there was not such research and actual development to grow on. It is not your grandad’s obsolete Oldsmobile
I saw where NASA is sending people and equipment to Devon Island for field tests.
And add a little red tint to a screen and it really does become ‘mars’.
Now that would be quite a scam but not out of the realm of possibility with the govt..

Exactly. Unless we solve a series of very difficult problems, we will not be going to Mars. Then of course there is the trillion or so dollars you would need. Not going to happen. In America of old, maybe, but certainly not with the mess of a flophouse we have today.
