Yaelle, I used to think of small towns like that, but I’ve changed: big cities have lots of choices, but it’s like having 500-channel cable versus 4-channel over-the-air TV. You just choose whatever you like the most from the available options, and mostly you forget that that there’s anything that might be slightly better. Maybe small towns don’t have oboe competitions, but a good piano teacher will give him what he needs, for instance.
In any case, there’s the whole outdoors to choose activities from, and those are healthier and they teach self-reliance. I’m afraid the constant drumbeat of Godless gender identity, etc, is worse in the cities. Even in states that mandate the teaching of perversion, small-town folk just ignore the insanity. So in my opinion kids are better in small towns overall.
When my son and I go to the Carson Valley, NV for a visit we never have to hide out MAGA opinions or signs. Here in Silicon Valley, I’ve had to replace my car signs several times. Finally, a supposed ideological soul-mate at church said my innocuous Trump sign was racially dismissive of Latinas, and emotions won over reason and logic. Can’t see that happening in conservative areas.
Just my opinion....
On moving: Here are some tips.
1. Go to you local wholesaler of cardboard and by single wall boxes. All the same size.
2. Buy colored stickers, different color for each room, placed on three different sides so color can be seen however stacked.
3. Buy newspaper for cushion wrap.
4. Goodwill/SA for a lot of cheap blankets for wrapping base furniture.
5. Contact trucking company to lease one or two 20’ pups. The companies usually give you five days to pack and unpack at distination For more, private post.
If you don’t mind the winters, I’d suggest Sioux Falls SD.
Don’t laugh. Take a look into it.
Good medical establishments, good roads, good schools, no state income taxes, lots of housing choices, good shopping and entertainment options, etc.
Tell your wife to pick 3 counties from the red/blue map and decide from there.
Why not Arizona?
I love Arizona. The only thing is I’m turning into a mountain man. Beyond the thing about Nevada’s familiarity to me (neighboring Arizona is pretty familiar too), the appeal of Nevada is the mountains, especially around Ely, NV and Great Basin National Park. Mule deer ripe for the harvesting. (I see a lot in AZ too.) Nevada is the most mountainous state in the contiguous United States, according to

I cannot argue with you. But I didnt fit so well in the Swiss small towns I lived in. Im weird so I like to do my own thing without neighbors in my face. I like city outskirts etc.
I won’t deny the mountain views in parts of Nevada; a type of scene Arizona does not have.
You’ve given me thoughts to reconsider my own resettlement choices.
Take a hard look at the state budget first.
There’s still room in Utah.
We left California in 2010 for eastern Tennessee — Bible Belt. It’s great!
Cowboys, farmers, mountain men, oilmen; Mormons, Scots-Irish Baptists, Cajun Catholics, German Lutherans. The backbone of America.
