Does Rand Paul Owe Gina Haspel an Apology?
NRO ^ | 14 March 2018 | Rich Lowery

Posted on 03/16/2018 12:22:10 AM PDT by lowbuck

Rand Paul launched a typically obnoxious attack on Gina Haspel today. Here is one account:

“To really appoint the head cheerleader for waterboarding to be head of the CIA? How can you trust somebody who did that to be in charge of the CIA,” Paul wondered, adding, “To read of her glee during the waterboarding is just absolutely appalling.”

Paul was referring to an account of a waterboarding session with suspected al Qaeda lieutenant Abu Zubaydah, who was subjected to so-called enhanced interrogation techniques now widely considered to be torture. ., .

The problem is that this conduct appears to be misattributed to Haspel. A U.S. intelligence official provided this statement:

Senator Paul’s claims today about Gina Haspel are not only inaccurate, but contradicted by the very source materials he relied on. The Senator quotes liberally from page 263 of James Mitchell’s book “Enhanced Interrogation” in describing the interrogation of Abu Zubaydah in claiming that Ms. Haspel was the CIA Chief of Base who was present and expressing joy at this interrogation. A reading of the same page demonstrates that the Chief of Base present and quoted during this event was a man, not Gina Haspel. This is just one of many false claims about Ms. Haspel being peddled by the uninformed. . . snip

Agree - Marshall, McArthur, Eisenhower, and Patton all believed waterboarding was a war crime.

They executed people who waterboarded others.

oh I read the article. It clears Hasel of only commenting on the drool of a victim. She ran a black ops interrogation center in Thailand. She ordered videotapes of illegal interrogations to be destroyed. She authorized torture of the wrong person. She is some kind of freak.

No, it doesn’t shock me. Rand Paul is consistent and passionate about his abhorrence of global warmongering, whomever the President is. What’s a shame is that he messed up the primary campaign by being anti-Trump. RP should’ve instead listened to why people were supporting DJT. RP’s posture made him seem like part of the establishment.

This torture is a training technique in our special ops units.

It’s actually enhanced interrogation.

...If we don’t waterboard Khalid Sheik Mohammed, we don’t get OBLs courier and if we don’t get him, we don’t get Bin Laden.

Some of you are worse than Democrats in your ignorance.

Then maybe you should read the following article. The original publication that made the original charge has retracted it. Seems Gina did not take over the base until the "tortures" in question were done. A man was in charge during that time. She is no kind of freak and you need to stop falling for left wing propaganda.

Retraction.

The story said that Haspel, a career CIA officer who President Trump has nominated to be the next director of central intelligence, oversaw the clandestine base where Zubaydah was subjected to waterboarding and other coercive interrogation methods that are widely seen as torture. The story also said she mocked the prisoner’s suffering in a private conversation. Neither of these assertions is correct and we retract them. It is now clear that Haspel did not take charge of the base until after the interrogation of Zubaydah ended.

James Mitchell, the psychologist and CIA contractor who helped to direct the waterboarding of both suspects, said in a broadcast interview on March 14 that Haspel was not the “chief of base” whom he described in his book as making fun of Zubaydah’s suffering.

P.S. I accept your apology.

Then why is it we water board our own soldiers during SEER training?

Rand, like his dad, eclipses brief moments of brilliance with an overpowering aura of pure idiocy.

p.s. From the article in question at top of thread. oh I read the article. It clears Hasel of only commenting on the drool of a victim.

I really don't think you read the article. If you had, you may have noticed the following;

A reading of the same page demonstrates that the Chief of Base present and quoted during this event was a man, not Gina Haspel. This is just one of many false claims about Ms. Haspel being peddled by the uninformed.

With all due respect, I think the author is talking about you in that bolded part. :)

I'm struggling with my strong feelings about apologizing to you.

“He does not need to apologize. He has strong feelings, well found feelings about her being unfit to serve in the position.”

Reminds me of a song: ...Feelings, nothing more than feelings,...

https://www.britannica.com/topic/International-Military-Tribunal-for-the-Far-East

Tokyo Trials are the most well known, but also happened in European war crime trials; usually of so called ‚small fish‘

Plenty of contemporary speeches by US military and Pols of the time declaring waterboarding to be a barbaric war crimes.

rather surprised that it’s news to anyone. Highlights the poor quality of gov’t schools theses days.

C'mon, Rand!

Waterboarding Valerie Jarrett, Eric Holder, McCabe, Strzok, Nellie Ohr, and the rest of that bunch is going to be no picnic.

Don't you want someone with experience?

Please provide references. Other than Eddie Slovik for desertion, all other executions under those commands were for murder or rape, unless you have other information.

RP is admitting by his actions that he is a liberal at heart. His convictions and principles matter more to him than fact checking.

This belief structure is what makes Rand Paul & Liberals so dangerous. They inflame hearts and minds with noble rhetoric while misrepresenting the facts out of ignorance or more likely because the facts do not serve their agenda. They gain power by deception and lead America into its own destruction. Think Global Warming, think Diversity is Strength - sound so noble but lies at the core peddled, in self service, causing misery and disruption of lives and society. Rand Paul is not working for Americans or America by being disingenuous.

Thanks for posting all of your comments on this thread. Well said. I think Trump is very comfortable with her briefing him and offering recommendations. I think she is a good fit at CIA and should be approved.

Thank you, and I concur. She seems to be a patriot and will neutralize the Deep State's most formidable weapon, the CIA. Many problems solved.

That is why the Deep State will fight tooth and nail to deny her the position. They will ride this proven lie into the ground. It disappoints me that Rand Paul and many on this forum are repeating the lie in the face of the overwhelming evidence of the truth. :(
