"Celebrated leading visionary bridge engineer Atorod Azizinamini, whose ABC (Accelerated Bridge Construction) technology was used to build the bridge that collapsed yesterday on Florida International University’s campus, was named an Obama era Department of Transportation ‘Champion of Change’ in 2015."

We had a similar problem with the same design bridge here in Minneapolis.

But then, why didn’t they erect the other half first?

I bet they are asking themselves that now
This will go down with the greats
Such as Galloping Gurdy

the design engineer or architect do not give the constructor instructions on how to build the project

thats a big surprise to me, i think if my work was being put up i would want it done right and kind of at least hang around the project; my architect buddy said he goes to sites at least twice, when the foundation goes in and the roof goes on.

I’ve never heard of such an approach and, I have to admit, it would be a weird design approach. But this bridge used the “innovative Accelerated Bridge Construction” method developed at the university. Who knows what they were capable of thinking.

Accelerated? I'm betting they meant "Progressive".

As a PE, we like to call those pictures architectural misconceptions...

“Galloping Gurdy” was a classic case of trying to build a bridge without proper interpretation of wind tunnel data from the model design. It appears that this bridge that collapsed was built improperly in the first place.

Seems a lot of stupidity reigns in America these days.

If that were only so. There is a mental illness infecting the entire world right now.

Watched a documentary about suspension bridge construction not long ago.

The towers went up first, then roadway and cables were built out on both sides of the tower, balanced, until it reached the approach on one end and midpoint between towers on the other end. The second tower was worked the same way. Last piece was the short section at the midpoint, connecting the towers.

I guess that's the old, non-accelerated method?

Yes, I include the world in that.

It certainly is ALL over the map.

If you look at the way the cable connections are angled, the post on the left IS the center post according to the rendering. It looks to me like the other part of the bridge as well as the support tower and cables were not in place.

Anyone who says the designers didn’t account for the loading of the structure at the current state of construction is as ignorant as a boiled egg. For a university professor to make such irresponsible statements is reprehensible. Something happened. Maybe something even criminal. Maybe just an accident. But until we know more, it is irresponsible to assign blame.

I believe that it way past time to ban bridges. for centuries bridges have been used to kill people either through a place to jump from or running into by transportation vehicles. They are and have been a place for violence and should be banned. We have no constitutional rights to bridges and we do not have an organization called the National Bridge Association to protect the rights of bridge ownership, therefore we should not meet much opposition.

If we cannot outright ban bridges this early in the game then we should at least restrict them to no closer than 250 feet from schools. We can protect our children.

I am also calling for a national protest for a walk out (from where I do not yet know)and a moment of silence for the number of minutes corresponding to the number of people killed.

in no way is this sarcasm meant to diminish the horrible fact that so many promising lives have been lost in this tragedy. My personal prayers go out to all of the family and friends for people killed or injured in this event.

I can’t imagine any jurisdiction would allow the construction of a bridge over a public roadway without a licensed engineer signing off on the design.

It seems obvious to me that the dead load of the bridge would dwarf the typical live load it is designed to carry.

Really? For a concrete pedestrian bridge? 950 tons? How many people does it take to weigh 950 tons? I think you must have it backwards.

I’m thinking we may find some affirmative action hires in the decision making chain. Bet you a bowl of pho.

Well, duh! Every story is written saying “the cables were loose and were supposed to be tightened “. Yet, every picture shows no tower or cables.

“So a bridge is being constructed where the main support structure has not yet been built???”

That would be OK, the bridge was *placed under load* where the main support structure was not yet built/completed/connected. It was placed under load in a completely incomplete state.

It’s so sub-3rd grade stupid it’s actually hard to explain cogently. Astoundingly stupid.
