San Francisco is 35 miles from the Hoover institute. That is a long drive in the bay area, even if it is counter to the commute.

It used to be that the peninsula 'commute' was south-to-north in the morning and north-to-south in the afternoon/evening. With all the Apple/Google/Facebook/Netflix workers living in S.F. and commuting to the South Bay, it's a sad fact that there are now pretty significant commutes in both directions.

The author of this piece probably should have rented an apartment in Menlo Park or Redwood City and avoided not only the commute but also the deficiencies of S.F. highlighted in the piece. Like the Apple/Google kids, though, the author of the piece is likely living in S.F. because Menlo Park, Redwood City etc are simply too boring.

I used to have an apartment up in the San Mateo highlands - delightfully boring.
