A year or two ago, knowing that I'd be out of state on Election Day,I went to Town Hall to get an absentee ballot.Expecting to be required to show ID I reached for my wallet when the Town Clerk said it wasn't necessary.Surprised,I asked here how she knows that I'm a resident of the town and that I'm a US citizen.

She replied that Massachusetts law made it illegal for any election official to demand an ID from anyone registering to vote or at a polling place.Even more astounded I asked her another question about citizenship. At that point her boss came to the window and basically accused me of being a racist.

Yes,boys and girls...welcome to Massachusetts,The Gay State!

She was more right than most would think. Election laws for state offices and local issues are determined by each state.

Election laws for President, Senate, and Representative are controlled by the feds. Clinton motor voter and the later Bush help America vote act makes it illegal for a person to ask if you are a citizen. It lets the registration form ask these three questions.

Are you 18 .....
Are you a felon .....
Are you a citizen ....

It states it is a felony to answer incorrectly.

If you think this is not true, go online to your state’s voter registration.

I laugh when they argue about having to show ID to vote when most people don’t know you do not have to prove citizenship to register. BVB
