San Francisco before the nuts took over.
Wonderful but sad to see what we have lost. Interesting that the comments look like they were written by Freepers. California in the late 50’s - early 60’s must have been heaven on earth.
I bet it was. I have never been. I’d still love to see it. But it musta really been neat back in the 40s, 50s, and early 60s.
I grew up here in so Cal. It was really nice, slow paced, beach days, American flags, Leave it to Beaver, haha. All that stuff. The country was pretty nice then too - all those nice WHITE MALES making things work right. Plenty of guns.
Don’t let folks here dissuade you. A host of problems to be sure, but it still has its beauty. I’m in the Bay area right now for work. Everything seems so bright and shiny. Would never want to live here, but it’s still a great place to visit. The tourist parts of SF are still wonderful, there is nothing I have ever seen that matches Big Sur, Tahoe is glorious, etc. etc.
We won’t get it back. :( Have to accept reality.
I just started to read Mexifornia. VDH is a good writer.
It was written in 2003. It could have been written yesterday. Nothing has changed.
Oh, I bet still lots to see. The Redwoods are #1 on my agenda if I should ever be so lucky to make it out there.
You’re right Big Sur is a beautiful place but for my money. I think the most beautiful place on the west coast is the Oregon coast it is breathtaking.
The giant redwoods are definitely on the scale of the Grand Canyon it is a one-of-a-kind experience.
Haven’t seen the GC either. I’ve been to the Canyonlands in UT many times, but not GC. Gotta do the GC and the Redwoods before I go.
The Canyonlands are beautiful as well they’re right up there. The first time I saw the Redwoods I was actually just driving through headed to Oregon, when we got into the forest the trees are so tall that even at noon on the floor of the forest it was almost dark it’s something.
I bet it is awe inspiring.
while “Playland” is long gone, “Laughing Sal” which use to greet visitors is now prominently displayed at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk 1.5 South of San Francisco via Highway 1.
Maybe I’ll go to the Cliff House tomorrow for lunch.
Despite its politics, it’s still one of the most beautiful city in the world. Don’t let it keep you from visiting it.
From there you can take highway 1 (the coastal highway) in either direction and you’ll see some of the most beautiful scenery. Drive for a couple of days and you’ll see a whole different California.
I’ll make it some day. I know I would love it.
it really was. I recall shooting real guns at Playland and Frontier Village.
no tethers.
How long are you here for?
unless you live here.
we see em all the time, all day long, in fact. LOL
