Should Democrats Embrace the Center or Abandon It?

Over the next six months, Democratic voters will be asked again and again whether their party’s candidates should hew to the center or move to the left.

How voters answer that question will help shape the strategic plans of the dozen or more Democrats jockeying to beat President Trump in 2020.

The intraparty tension has been simmering for months. Tom Perez, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, goaded party centrists last May when he declared abortion a Democratic litmus test:

“Every Democrat, like every American, should support a woman’s right to make her own choices about her body and her health,” Perez said in a statement. “That is not negotiable and should not change city by city or state by state.” Perez later backed off.

But in July, Ben Ray Lujan, a congressman from New Mexico who is the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, declared that not only would the D.C.C.C. support anti-abortion Democrats, he was already working closely with the Blue Dog caucus — the party’s 18-member conservative House faction, which includes several members who oppose abortion rights — to recruit candidates for 2018.

“There is not a litmus test for Democratic candidates,” Luján told The Hill. “You need to make sure you have candidates that fit the district, that can win in these districts across America.”

Democrats have not been near to the enter in decades. They can no longer even see the center in their rear-view mirror.

They should go hard left.

Run on open borders and gun confiscation.

Just trying to be helpful.

Blue Dogs are a trojan horse for the Left.

Once they get in office they reveal their true colors.

Republican voters who allow themselves to be fooled by them get exactly what they deserve.

Beware liberal wolves in conservatives’ sheep clothing.

They are not what they seem and they aren’t centrists. Conservatives stand duly warned.

It will not matter. Each democrat, once elected, follows his/her/it’s party commanders (er, commissioners) to the letter. They WILL run as conservatives though.

Democrats will lie and pretend to be in the center. They will do any abhorrent thing to win.

If they win, and a person was dumb enough to believe them, they will deserve the misery that follows.

I think thats already answered:

Doug Jones calls for gun control, attacks NRA in first Senate floor speech

First thing on the dudes agenda is to disarm the general public. Yeah, he didn't explicitly say it, but "universal background checks" is the euphemism for registration, which you can be assured leads to confiscation.

Between this and a recent interview with Sick Durban, the Democrats seem to be desperate to get the public disarmed.

Nope. Any Democrat telling you they are centrist, or talks a centrist line, is LYING.

All democrats are either 1. Far left marxist/fascist radicals or 2. Liars that claim not to be but will always support the far left agenda when push comes to shove.

All republicans, with very few exceptions are 1. Liars who support far left marxist/ fascist radicals.

Those individuals who claim the most loudly that such a label does not apply, are most assuredly part of the group.

That is really all one needs to remember about an accurate description of political standing.

They will never embrace the center. They’ll just pretend to if it helps them to win a seat here and there.

Any individual Democrats who are not radicals or Marxists left the party long ago. They are persona non grata, especially amongst the radical kook billionaires who fund that party.

“Should?” Already have. As I tell anyone who asks, I didn’t leave the Democratic Party, it left me, and every day it moves further left.

They can’t embrace the center unless they redefine the “center” as being pretty far to the left.

But, redefining words is a staple for any Marxist takeover.

Lie, cheat and steal.....the end ALWAYS justifies the means. The Dems have always been this way. The only question is ‘how can we win?’, not ‘what is best for the country?’. I wonder how all those centrist Doug Jones voters are feeling now. And those who were hoodwinked by Conor Lamb. They will see the truth as soon as he starts voting in the House. Those voters are always Charlie Brown and the candidates are always Lucy. And then there is the massive voter fraud.............

The laughable irony is that Trump is dragging the Democrat Party to the Right.
You won’t hear that from the NeoCons.

Democrats have not been near to the enter in decades.

The democrat party of today wouldn't even let men like Harry Truman or John F. Kennedy join the party let alone run for office as democrats.

You left out the name of the author, Thomas Edsall. This matters because (1) you give the false impression that the article is an official editorial, rather than an op-ed from one columnist; (2) whether we wish to click on the link may be affected by what we think of the author.
