Trump attorney John Dowd resigns amid shake-up in president’s legal team

John Dowd, a personal attorney to President Trump, resigned his post Thursday amid a shake-up in the president’s legal team as Trump has sought more firepower to deal with the special counsel’s Russia investigation.

The resignation came Thursday, according to three people familiar with the decision. Dowd declined to comment.

Dowd’s departure was a largely mutual decision made after the president lost confidence in his ability to handle special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s investigation and Dowd became frustrated with Trump’s recent efforts to bring on new attorneys, they said.

In recent weeks, Dowd clashed with the president, including an incident in which he disagreed vehemently with Trump over a legal strategy, according to the people.

Jay Sekulow, a Trump lawyer and spokesman for the legal team, told The Washington Post, “John has been a valuable part of the team and a friend and we will continue to cooperate fully with the special counsel.”

Trump added former U.S. attorney Joe diGenova to his legal team last week. And on Monday, The Post reported that Trump had urged his aides to reach out to legal superstar and former solicitor general Theodore B. Olson to join as his lawyer as he faces a likely interview with the Special Counsel’s investigative team and scrutiny for possible obstruction of justice.

Ted Olson is 77. Ever think a lot of these septuagenarian (and older!) heroes recommended for every Administration job may know their own limitations?

Not sure which “legal strategy” was the one where they disagreed. I hope Trump was not pushing to give a deposition. That would be a mistake.

T. Olson is about 77 y/o by now. He may think it’s too much of an uphill challenge at this stage in his life. No more ‘you & me against the world!’

I have changed my mind about Mueller.

I think the President should fire Mueller and Rosenstein after the US Marshals secure all of their files.

I understand that he will be impeached as a result. There is no doubt of this.

He should demand the floor of the Senate to defend himself and expose the whole of the coup plot, announcing that Obama, Jarrett, Brennan and Holder have been arrested by Military police.

Then, take it to the country.

No he won’t. He was hired to lead the counteroffensive when the OIG report is released which should hurt Rosenstein and Mueller very badly.

Looks to me like they’re switching from Defense to Offense.

To everybody even moderately on the left, they absolutely believe there was collusion, and more.

So true, one of my lefty “friends” is convinced Trump will be convicted and put in prison.

I have changed my mind about Mueller.

Ive changed my mind too.
I use to think Mueller was just a douche.
Now I realize he’s a criminal, incompetent, soulless douche.

Trumps about the same age. What’s wrong with 70-somethings?

We should say a prayer for all of them.

God bless these men and their work. Amen

The President can't demand to take to the floor of the Senate. An often overlooked Constitutional provision is that each house of Congress makes its own rules about how it governs its own house. We have constitutional separation of powers between legislative, executive and judicial branches, but also separation of powers between the two houses of Congress from each other and individually from the other two branches of government. Long way of explaining why the president can request, but never demand to speak before either house of Congress.

Also, what you recommend is incredibly risky and unnecessary. Mueller is in place as an unconstitutional check on Trump. He is the "insurance policy." Trump must find a way to defeat the unconstitutional block to the presidency, not just to him personally. Hopefully his new legal team will help him do it.

Did Joe D comment on this the past 2 months or so, whether he thought it was a bad idea for Trump to be interviewed by Mueller? I assume Joe would have said it was not a good idea, but I don’t know if Joe ever went on record about it.
