The authors are delusional to think SA can cut an enduring deal with Iran.

At least until they prove they can fight and win a ground war to protect their own borders.

Otherwise any "deal" would be as short lived as the Kingdom itself.

The best thing we could do for the Saudis is to tell them to get out of the Air Conditioned Jeep and fire their rifles.

They have the very best infantry equipment available anywhere in the world.

And no will to use it.

War sucks, but it is not like Saudi Arabia had any choice in this one. The Iranians goal was to use the Houthi rebels to attack Saudi Arabia. Iran is the main culprit here despite my distaste for Saudi Arabia and the past ties of their wealthy elite (members of the House of Saud) with terror groups.

A guy I know was a US advisor to a Saudi armored unit probably 25-30 years ago at this point. He has literal scars from an encounter with Yemeni armor back then.

The point being, KSA fighting the Yemenis is nothing new.

Some of the people in the State Department now were there in 2011 when the 0bama administration helped to start this thing. We have a lot of cleaning up to do ourselves.

This is a very old, very tribal fight, and it's a stretch to even pretend it's going to be able to be settled. This is, after all, the Middle East. Saudi Arabia wants out (now) but doesn't want to let the Iranians back in. In the meantime the thing drains both economies. How you'd even begin to negotiate this thing I haven't a clue.

“They have the very best infantry equipment available anywhere in the world.”

Money could buy the best American equipment(which is good for the weapons industry and the jobs that it creates, to be honest), but it cannot buy loyalty. Saudi royals are spoiled and hire Pakistani and Egyptian mercenaries. They ain’t be willing to put their lives on the line when the time comes. Think of Saudi Arabia as a really hard concrete. Once it cracks, good luck.

The Saud Empire's days are numbered. Once Salman goes, the family civil war starts and then the various tribes that were conquered by the SAud family will break away

Their armies don't fight as the officers are all members of the family, put in place due to family connections, not ability. The soldiers are treated like slaves and have no urge to die for their AlSaud masters

The best equipment in the world can't help them. They are doomed. and good riddance

As raiderboy typed - the Sauds are the ones who caused 911, Taliban, Alq, Izlamik state etc. - they have spent the money gained since the 80s on radicalizing the mohammaden world.

If it wasn’t for oil would anyone care if Saudi Arabia and Iran killed each other off.

Just saw this tweet from a Russian source:

US defense secretary says US refueling Saudi planes would prevent civilian casualties...

So would not using cluster bombs which SA has been.
