Skip to comments.Martel: in John Bolton, Kurds Finally Get an Ally in the Trump Administration

The announcement Thursday night that former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton would replace Gen. H.R. McMaster as President Donald Trumps National Security Advisor confirms the arrival of a new, distinctive voice in the Trump administration. On no issue will Boltons firm stance present a bigger departure from establishment dogma than his support for an independent Kurdistan.
Bolton has vocally, consistently supported the establishment of an independent Kurdish state, arguing that the Kurds have proven their ability to govern themselves and earned the support of the United States through their reliable cooperation with Washington against a number of jihadist threats, most prominently the Islamic State (ISIS).
The Kurdish people are divided among territories belonging to Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and Syria, making enemies of all these governments. For decadesand in particular recently, when all four countries faced a growing ISIS presence threatening their stabilityKurds of a variety of factions have proven willing to risk the lives of their armies to defend overlapping interests with America. They take their alliance with the United States seriously and rely only on support from Israel among their neighbors.

Martel? Charles Martel saved Europe. Hopefully, Amb. Bolton will savee or help save the Kurds.
None of our business. We already have too many worthless middle east allies corrupting our politicians and forever urging a greater expenditure of American lives and wealth. The last thing we need is to add another.
This may not be a popular sentiment here on FR, but I would advise President Trump to steer clear of any globalist "neo-con" A-holes like Bolton who would have been prime candidates for top cabinet posts in a Jeb Bush administration.
I voted for Trump to keep people like this OUT of Washington.
I’m glad the Kurds are happy with Bolton but the fight for our nation is here, at home. The domestic left is a far greater enemy to America than any foreign enemy Bolton can shake his fist at.
I’d like to hear more about how the Assad government is an ‘enemy’ of the Kurds, considering the level of autonomy the Kurds already have in Syria and the fact the SAA hasn’t really engaged against them at all.
Talk to each other.
Trump's campaign took off when he spoke about the foolishness of Bush and Bolton's Iraq War. At that same time, the activist globalist necons went into their never-Trump frenzy. And now two years later in hiring Bolton, Trump turns his back on some of his oldest supporters and rewards those who were against him from the first. That's not promising for his reelection chances.
If the globalist meddlers in DC spent half the effort at home in protecting and perfecting our republic as they do in trying to remake the world, both our nation and the rest of the world would be in a lot better shape.
Bolton is NOT a neocon, and being for the overthrow of Saddam does not make him one.
The nicest thing we can do for the Kurds is to stop throwing them under the bus. They have consistently helped us. I would be 100% fine with them distracting Turkey, Syria and Iran.
We need to support the Kurds. We should force Turkey to give up a chunk of territory in the East to the Kurds and another chunk to the Christians. If we has just ponied up a little more money and pressure to attack Iraq from the West at the same time as we attacked from the East, a whole list of problems would have been avoided and we would have saved a lot of lives. Pennywise, Pound Foolish.
Right — but Trump’s re-election is secondary here. I’m most interested in the principles at stake.

You seem most interested in doctrinaire. Unfortunately, POTUS is operating in the real world where compromises must be made.
President Trump doesn't need anyone from the list of names on this document polluting his administration:
I'll save everyone the trouble and post the names here:
Morton I. Abramowitz
Richard L. Armitage
John R. Bolton (well, how about that?)
Morton H. Halperin
James R. Hooper
Bruce P. Jackson
Mark P. Lagon
William Howard Taft IV
Dov S. Zakheim
So there you have it ... John Bolton calling on the Clinton administration to topple the (nominally Christian) Serb government on behalf of the radical Islamic insurgents in Kosovo.
This guy has been a war-mongering globalist for years. I suspect he's spent most of his time outside of government working as a paid shill for foreign corporate and government interests.
Unfortunately, POTUS is operating in the real world where compromises must be made.
Of course. So why not name Susan Rice or Valerie Jarrett as his National Security Advisor? /sarcasm off, or not/
Trump’s campaign took off when he spoke about the foolishness of Bush and Bolton’s Iraq War.
False. Trump’s campaign took off after the “Mexican rapist” speech and his resolute response to the controversy.
