Tal Rifat handed over to the Turkish regime

The historic city of Til Rifat in the Shehba region of Syria has been left to the Turkish forces within the scope of a deal with Russia and Damascus regime.

Paving the way for the Turkish regime’s invasion of Afrin, Russia has given green light for Tal Rifat now. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had announced recently that Tal Rifat would be their target after Afrin.

The city of Til Rifat, 21 km southeast of Afrin, houses the strategically important Minning Airbase which was also handed over to the invading Turkish forces, according to reports.

The invasion operation came after the withdrawal of heavy weaponry by regime forces from Tal Rifat in recent days.

The historic Tal Rifat city is located on the road that connects Kilis to Antep city in Turkey. The city is also important for serving as a significant transition route towards Manbij.

Local sources state that Russia and the Syrian regime ask for compromise over Jisr ash-Shugur city in Idlib region in return for Tal Rifat. Jisr ash-Shugur city, located on the main road between Latakia and Aleppo, served as a prominent station along commercial routes for a long time. A region rich in alluvium, the city has served as a civilian settlement for a century now.

With 167,000+ displaced persons from Efrin near this city, Russia gives green light to Turkey's Erdogan.

Trading chips. Who will actually finally win the game? So many lives in the balance. EU don't care, they are totally oblivious to the trap being set for them.

Manbij is up next, and we’ll get to see whether or not the United States is bluffing.

Mattis does not bluff.

He will defend US military. Period. And has stated will defend our allies there too.

I am thinking Russia's role here was to broker safe passage out for civilians and fighters willing to leave - as they just did in Ghouta-
Where the Kurdish diaspora will go remains to be seen- if the Russians brokered the deal then probably areas under Syrian govt control for humanitarian aid

Agree or not with this action, if Erdogan is going to take the city this will at least avoid death and destruction except for those who choose to stay and fight

It was not Russia who promised the Kurds their autonomy in exchange for battling ISIS and Assad ... promise that could not be delivered unless US willing to go to war against Turkey

So instead of Kurdistan, northern Syria is going to become a “ District 9” of Turks and “ FSA” and probably a sanctuary for dregs of ISIS and Al Qaeda militants.” A wretched hive of scum and villainy” who are already fighting among themselves

This is what Iranian news says about Manjib- that US and Turkey will occupy jointly... We shall see

Mattis is in a tough spot now
The struggle is more political than military
Bolton will determine his next set of orders

You discount the possibility of a total Kurd revolt, Turkey, Syria and Iraq.

It is possible.

Because Turkey is a member of NATO, does not make Erdogan an ally.

If it does, it is time for the US to exit NATO.

If there is a total Kurd revolt who is going to provide air cover and kill Turks for Kurdistan?

Dont see the Russians killing Turks
If the Syrians try we will bomb them

Mattis does not bluff. He will defend US military. Period. And has stated will defend our allies there too.

Well, don't be surprised if he decides its easier to defend the gas fields of Deir ez-Zor than it is to stand firm against Turkish aggression in Manbij.

Which is a far cry from a 30,000 strong SDF border security force as proposed a couple of months ago.

I'm sure the Kurdish forces will understand the nuance involved in that decision also...

Why the Kurds will win in Syria

Your linked article is from March 11th.

Two weeks later, not only does Turkey control Afrin but has taken Tal Rifat, with very little resistance.

Is this a rope-a-dope or have the Syrian Kurds been broken?
