Kim Jung-Un May Have Moved The Game In China

Yesterday we looked at the rumors of North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un visiting China and what that might portend. It didn’t take very long for the story to be confirmed. Kim was indeed in China meeting with President Xi Jinping and being treated to all the honors normally accorded a visiting head of state. After the meeting the two leaders made a joint announcement of how it had gone and North Korea delivered a startling pronouncement, saying that Kim had assured China that he’s interested in denuclearization, in addition to calming tensions on the peninsula. (Reuters)

China said on Wednesday North Korean leader Kim Jong Un pledged to denuclearize the Korean peninsula during an historic meeting in Beijing with President Xi Jinping, who promised China would uphold its friendship with its isolated neighbor.

After two days of speculation, China and North Korea both confirmed on Wednesday that Kim had visited Beijing and met Xi during what China’s official Xinhua news agency called an unofficial visit from Sunday to Wednesday…

“The issue of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula can be resolved, if South Korea and the United States respond to our efforts with goodwill, create an atmosphere of peace and stability while taking progressive and synchronous measures for the realization of peace,” Kim said, according to Xinhua.

The game has been moved because of Trump...

I’ve heard Leftists say that Gorbachev won the Cold War. It was Gorbachev’s brilliant leadership which caused the Soviet Empire to collapse and allowed the US to reap a huge peace dividend. Reagan, of course, played only a small part.

And now we see Kim Jung Un’s brilliant leadership bringing peace to East Asia, a denuclearization of North Korea, and a possible collapse of the communist dictatorship led by Kim’s family for generations. What a guy! Trump, of course, is playing only a small part.

” But color me skeptical as to the chances of our seeing it happen in Kim’s lifetime.”

Maybe prolonging his life is weighing heavily on kim’s mind.

That’s true. What’s unclear at this point is whether Kim is going to do more other than blow smoke up peoples’ asses like his father. North Korea’s leaders have always been willing to milk the cow’s tits.

So Trump does the unexpected and says “sure, I’ll meet Kim.”

The Communist bureaucracies are flummoxed, and need weeks to set up a meeting in Beijing, where Kim publicly scurries off to meet his dungeon masters in China so they can all decide what their next step will be

Brilliant!

Even the whack job with the bad haircut knows all he has to do is to wait for a change in administration.

This was a clever move by NK.

They want some heavy conditions to give up nukes and missiles.

NK’s goal is to get the US out of Korea and Kadena AFB in Japan. So NK runs to China, the referee that also owns the team, to get them on board with these “conditions” before they sit down with Mr. Trump.

Then if they don’t get their way during negotiations they keep running to China for support.

Very clever, locking the gorilla that is China in before negotiations.

Transcripts of the meeting with China are unlikely to be made available, so NK can characterize China’s stance any way they want during future negotiations.

China has either been hustled or they are offering NK some leverage.

Kim has assured China that he’s interested in denuclearization

Who'd a thought we would ever see this?

Would be cleaver except POTUS has leverage on China. Kim has been told to take his medicine.

If I’m Lil Kim, I go to China and tell them to help me set up Norklandia the same way China is now operating with state controlled capitalism in exchange for denuclearization, et al.

And since Xi has just been appointed chairman for life why can’t Kim?

But only, of course, if:

Which measures he has described as denuclearization of the entire peninsula (and perhaps even more re the U.S..

The issue of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula can be resolved, if South Korea and the United States respond to our efforts with goodwill... blah, blah, blah...

That does not sound conciliatory to me...sounds like he is setting conditions...which has worked so well in the past, as we can all see.

I may be wrong, but after the last set of tests Kim Jung did, there has been more earthquakes on the 5-6 ranges in the vicinity, and there are reports of radiation leaks that are affecting the population. NK may be killing their own people and now they can’t stop it. So DeNuclearizing may be the only way to save the region?

...if South Korea and the United States respond to our efforts with goodwill, create an atmosphere of peace and stability while taking progressive and synchronous measures for the realization of peace,” Kim said, according to Xinhua.

So, DPRK will denuclearize IF ROK and USA:

1) respond to DPRK efforts with goodwill
2) create an atmosphere of peace and stability
3) take progressive and synchronous measures for the realization of peace

It'll be real interesting to see what KJU's interpretations of those caveats mean.

I imagine 1) is something like "remove sanctions," 2) means "pull the aircraft carriers and air wings back"--maybe remove U.S. ground troops from ROK soil?

Not sure what 3) means, TBH. Generally pulling forces back from each side of the DMZ? An official end to the Korean War? Diplomatic recognition with embassies on both sides?

China's goal is get the US out of SK. That is the condition - everything else is noise. China will only allow NK to de-nuclearize if the US promises to withdraw from the penninsula. The perfect example is when JFK removed missiles from Turkey in exchange for the USSR removing them from Cuba.

It's actually a good deal all around. The only reason we're there is protect the SK economy/political system. If re-integration occurs, then the threat is removed. The difficulty will be the managed, phased withdrawal, which could take a decade. But the payoff is unifying a relic of the cold war proxy wars.
