St. Louis is no longer one of the top 20 largest metropolitan areas in the country. Newly released US Census Bureau numbers show the city's population declined by more than 4,500 people to just over 308,000 residents. That's the largest drop since the 2010 census.

The St. Louis region is now 21st on the list of the nation's metro areas.

The Baltimore area, which had been ranked 21st, swapped spots on the population list with the St. Louis region. The City of Baltimore saw a drop in population greater than St. Louis city, but Baltimore’s loss represented a 0.9 percent decrease, compared with a 1.4 percent loss in St. Louis.

Outside of politics, the loss of Ford and Chrysler assembly lines and all of their support industries hurt the whole ST. Louis region.

308,000? There are suburbs in California larger than that.

While Philadelphia and Pittsburgh control PA, St. Louis and Kansas City do not control MO.

St Louis is a bleephole. Who wants to even admit you live there, let alone actually live there.

“The population crash in upstate NY in the last sixty years is an amazing story—not well known.”

Agreed, although I would start with something stronger like “Due to horrific and politically-caused economic destruction, ...”

Government or Public/Union Job is all there is any more in the north and western regions. What was once considered the northern ‘burbs is now “Upstate” to many tri-state focused folks.

Heck, anything north of Poughkeepsie, with a very few exceptions is nearly just empty wasteland.

One needs to put it in the perspective of an Illinois / Missouri rivalry - anything they can do, we can do worse: East Saint Louis.

Memphis and New Orleans have the same common theme.

Those who worked left after the riots. Those who left are stuck there. Time for Detroit part 2. The slow decay into urban death.

...Ferguson riots

St Louis decline predates Ferguson by decades. The city’s population in 1950 was over 800,000 and it shows. Driving on the Interstates will take you through great swaths of abandoned, boarded up buildings—homes, churches, factories, etc. And of course the ‘Ferguson problem’ is heavily present in St Louis city as well.

St Louis city separated itself from St Louis county many years ago, so its city limits are locked in—it can’t expand. As producers fled the city for the county so did the tax base.

On a happier note, at some point St Louis will drop out of the running for “murder capital of the US” simply because it won’t have enough population to qualify for the competition.

That's just 21,000 ahead of Toledo.

That’s funny; Camden NJ maintains the illusion of “improvement” for the same reason - less perps AND victims of crime.

Unfortunately, stories of the Darwinian deaths of these areas simply lead the government worker caste to insist that we re-populate these areas with poor Hispanics from south of the border.

Sad... I grew up in Chesterfield and Creve Coeur. Forest Park and Laclede’s Landing are no longer safe, even during the day. Definitely a Ferguson effect- loss of respect for private property, loss of empathy for anyone with a different color than you.

I grew up near Belleville, which has morphed into East St.Louis....and all that entails... Very sad....gets worse every day.

I had some unfortunate dealings with a group of business people from St.Louis.

All of them a bunch of crooks, liars, and slave drivers. Some others have far worse things to say that were affiliated.

No sympathy.

If you would look it up by metropolitan area, you would find that the St. Louis metropolitan area ranks somewhere around the 250th most dangersous metropolitan area.

Whites are fleeing to suburbs in a repeat of the “urban removal” fiasco of the 1960s. They’re fed up with being arm-twisted by dolomite-headed Liberals running cities aground.

Will white flight save America from the marxist curse of multiculturalism?
