Why? Because VW unveiled two years ago their electric car platform, Modularer Elektrobaukasten (MEB) or Modular Electrical Construction Kit. Designed to scale from very small cars up to the vehicles the size of the current Passat sedan, MEB could replace every non-luxury car VW model by 2023. So while Tesla fails, VW will be in the cutting edge of electric car development.
VW Group’s Audi e-Tron and Porsche Mission E vehicles are or will soon be on the market as direct Tesla competitors.
I don’t think so. My wife had a VW when we met and I was absolutely staggered at not only the poor quality, but the stupid engineering decisions. I had to go on line and spend 15 minutes changing a headlight lamp; they’re at the front of a box you have to take apart, and can only access by opening the hood. If you opened the ash tray (which is in the back seat, because of course it’s the kids that smoke), you disconnect the wiring which runs along it. Good luck finding your flashers in an emergency; they’re on the roof.
Not so much VW as nissan-renault. The leaf is a wonderful electric city car.
