...but last century some students attended class armed with their rifles and practiced shooting on school grounds.

What do you mean last century? When I was in first grade in 1966 the high school kids used to bring their rifles to school and shoot at birds during lunch. One day the school got a letter from the local power and light coop asking the school to stop the students from shooting up the power lines. The principle, who was a personal friend of my father's and a member of our church, saw it as an opportunity to ban guns at school all together. That prompted an emergency meeting of the school board, and they fired him.

1950's...We all carried knives when I was a kid...even at age 6, 7 and up...Cuz we played a game called mummly peg ??? That's a looooong time ago.

And we had cap guns and squirt guns.

And when we were maybe 10, 11...we got to practice with a 22.

My high school was a half mile from prime duck hunting waters. We used to bring our shot guns to school and store them in the vice principal’s office (1969) so we could hunt after school for a couple hours. No one got killed or shot.

My old High School has the remnants of a shooting range in the basement. It is a storage area now.

It is next to the fall-out shelter.

When I was growing up we would always bring shotguns/rifles with us to school and store them in our rifle racks attached to the back windows of our trucks. We would hunt before and after school.

Get this, it was the late 80s / early 90s in California! My how times have changed.

I was in high school in the late 1970’s in South Florida.

We had lots of pick up trucks with gun racks in the school parking lot. Many had guns in them.

I distinctly remember one of the guys on the football team bringing in his new shotgun to show our math teacher, Mr. Dubbs. It was open and empty, but still, bringing in an unloaded shotgun on school property today will get you arrested. Back then, it was no big deal.

My how times have changed.

I shot .22 rifles in school, many, many years ago. You had to be in ROTC to do that. I learned a lot about shooting from that.

We did not carry rifles with us in school or back and forth from home either. They were all kept locked up in the firing range. They were checked out for shooting and checked back in when we were done.

I grew up in rural NorCal in the 60s. My dad was the
high school ag science teacher and his pheasant hunting
pal was the wood shop teacher. In the 70s the shop
teacher was teaching students how to make cross bows,
daggers, and he even had his gun bluing equipment at
school for the students. Of course lots of guys brought
their firearms to school. No use letting deer, quail,
or dove hunting seasons go to waste just because you
have to spend a few hours at school.

This month, more than 100,000 city public school kids walked out to protest gun violence — but last century some students attended class armed with their rifles and practiced shooting on school grounds.

Back in the '60s, my Dad got with our metal shop teacher and started a gun club at the school. Lots of NRA-sanctioned training and dry sighting on the school property (in the shop room which was big enough to be effective) and used a school bus to get us to a range for live fire. The worst trouble we used to have those days was a few bad apples trying the bully path and they usually either got ate up and spit out when enough regular kids had enough or when a teacher told them to try it with them....occasional fist fight but no knives or guns used - and the Dems would hate for us to go back to those days....
