How ‘Chappaquiddick’ Distorts a Tragedy
New York Times ^ | April 6, 2018 | Neal Gabler

Senator Edward Kennedy, one of the most famous members of America’s most famous family, understood that he belonged as much to popular culture as to political culture. Now, nine years after his death, comes a movie about the event that, almost as much as the circumstances of his birth, established him in the tabloid pantheon: Chappaquiddick.

Nothing was covered up except that Teddy was driving, that he left a young girl to die in his car, that he was intoxicated, etc., etc. The cover-up didn't last very long, at least that he was driving, but it was a calculated move on the part of the Kennedys to try to salvage Little Ted's political ambitions. Reading this review, the movie almost sounds like a documentary rather than “character assassination”.

"an artist isn’t saddled with the same obligations to fact that a biographer or historian is."

Perhaps, but both are subject to human weaknesses. Histrionics, for example.

And that's no assurance that the obligations will be fulfilled. Bias, for example. Willful blindness to truth, for another.

Saw the movie last night and it is fantastic. The actor playing Ted deserves a nomination for Best Actor but will never get it due to the Dem party - Hollywood connection.

Wish this movie came out during the summer of 1980.

"The Kennedy men were/are the embodiment of the white, privileged, drunken, groping narcissistic Frat-boys the Left claim to hate, yet...."

Yes, but the Left typically claims to hate what the Left actually is, just as it typically accuses others of doing what it is doing.

Racism. Intolerance. Injustice. Hatred. Privilege. To name only a few examples.

Just wondering if the movie is playing in your area or did you have to drive a distance to see it?

..no one but the most lunatic commie propagandists see this as anything but a brazen snuffing out of the life of a young girl in which a member of the “elite” got away with cold-blooded murder in a big time cover up.

Unless I have been misinformed, Joe Kennedy, the patriarch, could say only “No” after his stroke.

Teddy, the big nosed Senator, drove into the water, freaked out, everyone tried to cover it up.

I stopped reading at the third paragraph at the first line you mentioned. At least the author, through his alternative vision of reality, saved me a little time.

I really trust the NYT to give us a complete, objective and accurate account of “Chappaquiddick”.

Thbe thing I like best about the commercials is that at no point does Ted Kennedy even consider just coming clean and telling the absolute truth.

Maybe the movie has a scene where he does consider this.

Here is the conspiracy and the sordid details.
1. This was a reunion for the “Boiler Room Girls”, part of RFK’s campaign team, 6 unmarried females under 28 and 6 married men all 30 and over.
2. Teddy and Mary Jo left party to go to a beach they had frequented many times before, a “cop” noticed their car and approached them, Teddy drove off.
3. At the Dyke bridge, went in water, where Teddy says he dived more than 10 times to retrieve Mary jo’s body.
4. Teddy then walked past 4 homes on his way to the party, where he got 2 “friends” to leave and go back to car to help. No one phoned police, and issue was discussed.
5. Back at car, discussion of “who” should alert authorities, both parties claimed the other said they would contact.
6. Teddy swims back to main island and hotel.
7. Teddy “wakes up” at 2:30 and contacts hotel manager about a loud party...(alibi).
8. Teddy “wakes up” at 7:30 and goes back to car discusses with “friends” who are peeved no one called police.
9. Teddy goes back to main island, calls police finally 10 hours later.
10. Car had already been found, diver found Mary Jo, without panties on...see previous point about being at beach, and Mary Jo was in a position to breath an air pocket in overturned car.
11. Autopsy proved Mary Jo dies of suffication not drowning, as she breathed the air pocket for a lengthy period of time.
How is this not a conspiracy??? Oh I forget, Teddy was the lion of the senate.
