There's a reason racism in America is so pervasive and intractable, says actor and activist Danny Glover. Plantation capitalism is woven into the fabric of the country -- "the wealth of this country was built around slavery," (uh no, it wasn't) he told CBS News' Major Garrett, host of "The Takeout" podcast
Glover argues that a factor in the addressing race is that Americans have not given up the psychology around this.
"The Missouri Compromise, 1822, is based on due process," he told Garrett. (yeah sure go back 200 years) "That white people have a right to own a slave. Like they have a right to own a cow. Like they have a right to own a pig. Like it or leave it. So you imagine how people seem from that vantage point as simply possessions." The Missouri Compromise was an act of Congress preserving the balance between slave states and free states by allowing Missouri into the U.S. as a slave state and Maine as a free state.
This week marked the anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a moment that stills moves Glover to tears, (Why? liberals don't believe in anything King said anymore) 50 years after the civil rights icon was assassinated on a Memphis hotel balcony.
"The idea of commemoration is not enough to say what this moment means," Glover said. "The memory of King allows us to kind of now re-dedicate ourselves to [his] vision." (his vision? His vision was a colorblind society, something which liberals now say is "racist")
It seems to me racism in this Republic was reignited after the first black president was sworn into office.
Danny is almost correct. Racism is woven into the fabric of the many non-whites in the country.
Can’t wait for Danny to weigh in on the current slavery happening in east Africa.
If he’s against slavery why does he support the party that is into importing cheap slaves from south of the border, that keeps people enslaved to government handouts and supports companies that take advantage of slave labor in China?
The wealth of Facebook and Youtube were built on slavery.
Change my mind.
Hey Mr. Glover: which countries don’t have a problem with racism?
Racism, sexism, homophobia, islamophobia, etc is why overpaid mannequins like Glover can become insanely rich from reading lines and playing make believe. Shut up and stcik with what you know.
Why do these dumb ass ‘celebrities’ think they are relevant?
Massive ego trip fail.
The British Empire had legalized slavery in their American colonies.
After the American Revolution, there was some effort to end slavery but it proved politically impossible, and so we retained slavery for a time.
In 1805 we banned the importation of slaves.
In 1861 - 1865 we fought a war which resulted in the defeat of slave owning states.
We amended our Constitution to end slavery.
We integrated the military.
We integrated baseball.
We passed the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
We elected a black man as president. Twice.
And STILL idiots like Danny Glover comes out and say, “Yeah, but back in 1822 ...”
So it’s hopeless. The chip will be on their shoulder forever. So why should I care what they think?
Notice that Danny Glover treats all whites the same. The ones in the north who ended slavery peacefully and the ones in the south who didn’t. The ones from the north who fought a civil war to end slavery and the ones in the south who fought to defend their region from what they viewed as an invasion. The ones from the south who, despite the urge to protect their home from an invasion, joined with the Yankees in order to end slavery. The whites who arrived here after the Civil War was over. What do all those people have in common: their skin color.
.........Arnold’s twin, right???
If memory serves...or maybe another flik..
@PlanetWTF!
+++++++++++
This D- actor has the IQ of a grapefruit.
“Why is Danny still here?”
Danny makes Juan Williams look like a Mensa!
Indeed. I think his beloved Venezuela would welcome him.
“.........Arnolds twin, right???”
No, that the other idiot Danny, Danny DiVito, the little bald Italian Dwarf who is married to Rhea Perlman.
Danny Glover has cow manure for brains. If Mel Gibson had not given him a job in the Lethal Weapons movies, we would not have to hear from him.
Well, if he thinks it’s the foundation then he’s free to move out of the house built on that foundation.
If he hurries he might have enough be time left to become a dictator of a small non-white 3rd world sh#thole.
And the esteemed glover has made how much money on one of the real foundations of our country ‘free enterprise’? He needs to move and make some Bollywood movies in Delhi if the US system is too racist for his wallet.
