A kid who has not yet reached the age of puberty, and who does not actually know what is the difference between male and female, suddenly decides to be the opposite sex, and you don't think the parents put them up to it?
How is a kid to know what the opposite sex is at that young age?
Sexual brain and genitalia “malformations” (for want of a better word) are REAL. They happen during a very small window, maybe as small as a week, of early fetal development
I think genetic defects that confuses "gender" are far more rare than are occasions of liberal parents Munchhausen syndrome-ing through proxy their children.
This is an example of what I am talking about, and there are far more of these sorts of examples out there.

Sounds like the researcher is predisposed to affirm trans people. I have no problem with an adult wishing to dress as he or she likes, but there are some things I do have a problem with about transsexuals:
1. The Transsexual Activists want the right to do whatever they wish and want to have society unanimously approve of their choices, to the point of judicially forcing approval and penalizing disapproval. They want to live a fantasy but be allowed to act in their everyday lives as though nothing were different.
2. Transsexual Activists want to rewrite science to affirm that it is possible to change one’s sexual identity for all purposes even after many years of living as the opposite sex.
3. Transsexual Activists want to freeze children in what might be a normal phase of curiosity about the opposite sex into permanent sexual identity, mainly to exonerate their own proclivities and prove it is “involuntary”.
4 The Transsexual Activists want to be approved of their choices while, at the same time, engaging in deep deception as to their true identity. They seek to toy with other peoples’ emotions to satisfy their own wants without being open about being men dressed as women or women dressed as men. (Several years ago a transsexual youth was murdered because he fooled some men into having sex with him. I don’t condone the murder but it is absolutely insane to toy with people’s intense emotions by using deception. One or two of the men actually believed the act had made them homosexual. In their rage, they beat the kid to death.) If you are transsexual, fine, but be open about it. Don’t pretend to be something you aren’t, especially when you are messing with strong emotions like sexual attraction.

Nobody is transgender. Some people have mental issues and refuse to believe the reality of who they are. It’s no different from some guy believing he’s the Pope and demanding to be let into the Vatican.
