Insect farms gear up to feed soaring global protein demand

LANGLEY, British Columbia (Reuters) - Layers of squirming black soldier fly larvae fill large aluminum bins stacked 10-high in a warehouse outside of Vancouver. They are feeding on stale bread, rotting mangoes, overripe cantaloupe and squishy zucchini.

[snip] Enterra Feed, one of an emerging crop of insect growers, will process the bugs into protein-rich food for fish, poultry - even pets. After being fattened up, the fly larvae will be roasted, dried and bagged or pressed to extract oils, then milled into a brown powder that smells like roasted peanuts.

Yep, concur. Most people have never been hungry enough to realize what you will eat when you get to a certain point.

Shades of E and E school and Arctic survival. Dieting to the max.

Just a supplement until Soylent Green gets into full production....

Close your eyes and imagine “peanut butter”, to put on the Soylent Green wafers.

That is an awesome idea. Easy to grow, live on garbage. Great protein for animals.

Before people hit the roof in shock and disgust about eating insects for food, know that the Mexicans eat certain types of grasshoppers (chapulines) and some Japanese eat preserved grasshoppers (inago no tsukudani) as a regular part of their diet.

Branding could be pretty tedious.

And how would you milk all those tiny udders?

That scene in Blade Runner 2 about raising insects as protein farmer was meant to be HORROR, not an instruction manual.

Locust “flour” and cricket “flour” is already used in a few cutting edge protein bars.

It’s a great idea for chicken and animal feed. It can be done on a small family homestead scale.

I think Welfare programs should be primarily food-based:

Seventy years ago they picked up Commodities on Tuesday. Beans, cheese, flour, powdered milk sometimes canned meat. I am from an age when people could and did live on flour and beans.

Yup. I don’t think people should starve in this country. But being poor should be ... unpleasant.

As many have observed, if you:
Get some education
Get some kind of job
Get married
Have kids AFTER you marry
And stay married

You chances of being “poor” are almost nil.

Kids growing up in a poor environment should be constantly reminded: some cultural behaviors lead to the poverty you’re living in. And some cultural characteristics lead to a much better life. For you. For your children.

See the difference. Make a choice. It’s totally up to you. No one can keep you down except for You.

Great protein for animals.

I watched some prepper video where he took a 5 gallon bucket with small holes drilled into the bottom and placed any dead chicks in for the flies. The flies lay eggs and the maggots hatch and fall through the holes and feed the chickens.

...

They all eat insects anyway. If it’s economical, why not? It’s better than humans eating insects, and this could leave more food for us.

Every year there’s some stupid article about how we’re all gonna eat bugs. So far, still steak in my food.

...

People should read the article. Thank you.
