We totally &#%&^#ed up in 1853 when Lincoln recklessly released a population of 3,000,000 freed slaves into a total population of about 20,000,000 entrepreneurial, adventurous, freedom loving, patriotic American citizens and just expected the slaves to take to America as a duck to water. How was that supposed to work??? The original Americans had all come to America to seek their fortunes in different ways. (I think it was Lincoln’s plan to return the slaves to Africa if he hadn’t been assassinated. Can you imagine the pain that would have saved us???)
