my new girlfriend said I was stinking. As a smoker, you can’t smell how you smell.

Ouch!...reminds me of the old FR battles where they contended smokers don't stink.

Well the smoking wars are over.

>>Well the smoking wars are over.<<

The proponents are dead or dying.

I used to smoke and defend anyone’s right to kill themselves that way but the 2nd smartest thing I ever did was quit smoking.

Isn’t a pack of smokes about 10 bucks now?

This was a very unusual article. Forget the content or topic, I’m not talking about that.

This was unusual in this day and age in that it was well written.

Tobacco saved me a ton of money. I just did my taxes. I’m 64 and don’t have health insurance. I try to take the “fair share” payment exemption by showing the bronze plan would cost more than 8.1% of my income. If I’m a smoker, it does. If I’m not a smoker, it doesn’t.

By enjoying a fine cigar every couple of months, I become a tobacco user, saving myself well over $2,000 this year.

The 1st smartest thing I ever did as a young man was vowing to never again kiss a gal who smokes. Did that once and it was like licking an ashtray, yuck. (Came after the 2nd thing which was to quit smoking, myself.)

Well the smoking wars are over.

Are they? I don't understand why smoking marijuana is viewed as ok while smoking tobacco is somehow despicable. Smoking wacky tobacky escapes public disapproval even though it carries additional personal and public health risks over tobacco smoking. Go figure!

The farmers should switch from growing tobacco to growing marijuana. They will become heroes.

I smoke like I have since I was 15/16....the numbers per 100,000 are nominal as far as usage/cancer ...blah blah blah. They cite the “advertizing” which the TOBACCO industry stalled as to why teens still smoke ... B.S. the settlement did nothing except make scumbag lawyers rich and smokers ended up footing the/all costs. I now buy “pipe tobacco” at a price of 14-16 dollars a pound and roll my own . One pound lasts 3-4 months ...so the state and fed lose thier precious tax money from “per pack” sale with me as pipe tobacco is in a far lower tax class. I find it sad every comment is like listening to the tripe spewed by all who profited by squeezing the tobacco farmers whose ancestors got this country going.....not interested in non-smokers gripes , you would be screaming bloody murder if the tax revenue were not in the till’s for states and federal usage ... I am a smoker of tobacco and I enjoy it to no end , besides coffee it is my only real vice.

I grew up in a household where both my parents smoked like chimneys. They both died horrible deaths thanks to Winstons (Mom) and Kents (Dad).Thankfully I never got into cigarettes and now have healthy lungs. And despite my having once been very accustomed to cigarette smoke I'm surprised by how disgusted I am by it today.

Doesn’t matter the reasoning.

It’s a nasty habit. People that do it smoke thousands of dollars away a year because they race through packs of that stuff per day, smell like smoke, and leave horrid health issues later in life that most cant remotely afford to take care of.

Oh that day you reach an age and realize that you grew up with a very unique smell from other kids is very eye-opening.

Correlation does not imply causality, but this is interesting. I wonder if we simply haven't swapped one malady for the other.

Then if you layer this data, it is possible this demonization of tobacco was all for naught.

I smoked for about 50 years and went with e-cigarettes for about 3 to 4 years and was down to zero nicotine but still enjoyed that, but I just quit that because it was so easy to quit at no nicotine level. Best thing I have done.

I grew up in the 1950s/1960s...middle class suburbia.Everyone smoked...my parents we far from unique. At least not in *my* neck of the woods.
