Thanks for posting, I’m ruined. Met him once, at MCRD, you never saw Marines eyes glow like they did when he was talking.

Carry on Gunny, Semper fi. See ya downrange.

Yep. Up until Full Metal Jacket Jack Webb was what people thought a DI was like. He showed the world a REAL DI.

I always thought of Darren McGavin from "Tribes".

I loved him in the Geico commercial where he played a psychiatrist and threw the tissue box at the young man who was his patient.

Definitely a victim of type-casting.

But overlooked are his roles as the victim's father in "Dead Man Walking" or the judge in "Murder in the First". He got cast as the military hard-ass a lot but he proved he was capable of a lot more.

He was the real deal. No need in talking about his life. We all know it. He was a patriot like no other. The Siege at Fire Base Gloria might be the best Vietnam War movie ever made. Ermey wrote the screen play.

RIP Gunny.

RIP, Marine.

Give my regards to the late Sgt. Hulka in the Great Beyond (or the actor who played him).

Wikipedia has April 15, 2018, for his date of death...but they haven’t revised the entry (still some present-tense verbs in the article). The article says that GEICO fired him in 2011 after he criticized the Obama administration for its economic policies. Apparently he was blacklisted by Hollywood from that point on.
