What’s funny is that Lee Ermey hadn’t even been hired to play the role of Gunny Sgt. Hartman.
For one thing he wasn’t an actor... he had been hired as a consultant to teach a real actor how to be a DI... which resulted in a videotape of Ermey shouting obscene insults non-stop for 15 minutes.. Kubrick saw that and hired Ermey instead.
There’s also the rumor that Ermey had asked for the role and Kubrick said no- at which point Ermey barked “Stand up when you’re spoken to!” and Kubrick instinctively obeyed. And that got him the role.

RIP.
His most bizarre role was in the movie “Saving Silverman” (2001) where at the end he and Jack Black were gay for each either. This was of course played for laughs.
The most recent thing I’ve seen him in was an episode of “SVU” in 2010. I see he has a few credits since then.

Good decision by Kubrick. His performance made the film.

Very sad news.
He reminded me of one of my Marine uncles, very much.
Losing an American like him, while so many others who cause so much harm to this Country are still here... It’s just crap.
RIP Gunny, and OOORah...

You comparing army recruit training to Marine boot camp? First of all...I said *close*,not identical.I've never experienced Marine boot camp but I have seen Full Metal Jacket *and* heard stories from a good buddy who did so in '67.You,I assume, have never experienced Army BCT.
Let's not get into this inter-service rivalry $hit.Every branch of the Armed Forces has an important mission and,IMO,they all carry out that mission well.
Disagree if you must...but don't expect me to be persuaded
