That new rank came in 1960-61
I was a S/Sgt (E-5) at that time and I became an Acting S/Sgt.
The Corps provided acting ranks(Temp) for a few years until promoted; other wise I (A S/Sgt) would have reverted to a buck sgt (three stripes) and loss of SNCO privileges!
Explanation:
The new enlisted ranks of 1960 was a complete restructuring of rank titles, bringing back the old GySgt Rank, and the New L/Cpl rank.
Sgt became Cpl, SSgt became Cpl, and so on down the line!
Same paygrade, but rank insignia/title changes.
There was a cutoff date to revert to new ranks if not promoted in the interim.
